[Videogames] Zhengtu Online, The Original Sinner of free-to-play gaming and lootboxes

Hi everyone, this is my first contribution to HobbyDrama, I hope this is an entertaining read and also to the community's standards. Let's go!!
Brief glossary before we begin (and some foreshadowing)
MMORPG: massively multiplayer online role-playing game, MMO for short. A videogame genre that generally invites hundreds, or up to thousands, of players to share a space. Depending on the game, anything from general adventure to large-scale war to economy and politics can be simulated. I find it hard to believe that anyone reading this could possibly not know what this is but it's included anyway.
Electro-convulsive therapy: ECT for short, it is a form of treatment where electrodes are "carefully" hooked up to a person's head and a "precise" level of electric shock is delivered, in order to treat major psychiatric disorders. Developed in 1938 when most psychiatric treatments was in their infancy, it is still used today occasionally for serious cases of depression, mania, or psychoses. In its early days however, there were widespread claims of abuse associated with its use.
Pt1: The Root of all that is bullshit
Zhengtu Online (hereafter referred to as ZT) was an immensely popular MMORPG that was developed in China and primarily served a Chinese playerbase. Released in 2006, at its peak it boasted more 2 million players, which while not particularly impressive relative to World of Warcraft (8mil worldwide at the same time), was a truly insane amount of success in a gaming scene that was very much in its embryonic stage.
The game itself was an unimpressive Diablo-style top down fantasy setting, and its gameplay loop primarily revolved around improving your ability to kill various things, but what made it special was the overarching metagame: every player population (sharing a server) was divided into 10 kingdoms. Kings and generals were all individual players, and they dictated politics to their neighbors--primarily in the form of initiating player-vs-player (or PVP) warfare.
Most contemporary MMOs had an upfront price plus a monthly subscription fee. In China, such pricing models were mostly replaced by paying oney for a set amount of ingame playing time. Unlike all of them, ZT was completely free to play (F2P).
Free to play, however, meant pay-to-win: the best weapons and armor, and even leveling up your character, needed you to pay real money. Since so much of the game was focused on PVP, it also created an eternal arms race between players, each paying for the privilege of not being evaporated by a high level enemy.
The way they did this was unique at the time. While F2P online games had already seen their rise in South Korea, equipment was generally priced explicitly via in-game currency and bought in virtual shops. ZT fused this with the sweet, sweet taste of gambling: gear in the game was primarily obtained in loot boxes, and you had to pay for keys to open them.
It needs to be emphasized that gambling of any kind was illegal in China, but, in an eerie parallel of American CEOS in the future, ZT's developers said it wasn't gambling because, well, you weren't getting your money back.
By combining this with multiple other exploitative practices, such as providing a small amount of premium currency like a casino giving you a free bet on the house, or awarding special items to the player with the highest number of lootboxes opened in a day, ZT was making money like taking candy from a candy-hating baby, and made gaming history.
As far as what this means for gamers, this was Eve giving Adam the apple, Oppenhemier splitting the atom, Prometheus stealing fire, Caesar crossing the Rubicon, and goddamn Helen Keller signing "water".
If you play any kind of videogames today, you've stepped through the long shadow that ZT had cast. Zynga (developers of Farmville) would be founded in 2007 and focused exclusively on free games with real-money integration. Lootboxes made it into Team Fortress 2 in 2010, one of the first major western-developed games to include them.
Similar mechanics (with varying degrees of exploitative practices) came to FIFA in 2010, Mass Effect 3 in 2012, Counter-Strike in 2013, League of Legends in 2016, and NBA 2K in 2017, infecting every genre of gaming under the sun, including the most popular MMO, World of Warcraft. As an aside, corporate defense of lootboxes in Star Wars Battlefront II also led to the most downvoted Reddit comment of all time.
Finally someone speaks out
The System, an article published in the Chinese newspaper Southern Weekly in 2007, was a hard-hitting expose on the exploitive practices of ZT. It chronicled the rise and fall of a gamer who accidentally becomes the monarch of one of these in-game Kingdoms, her addiction to the game, and final disillusionment when she realized that in-game player behaviour was being explicitly manipulated by its designers for the purpose of creating addicts and selling more lootbox keys.
The whole article is worth a read, even if it is sensationalist in a way that immediately tells you the writer was clearly a failed novelist of some kind - describing virtual destruction with the kind of prose most people would consider and then discard for a gang rape, for starters. But it had gotten its point across. It created an explosive backlash against the game in China, and was even translated into English and propagated across gaming forums.
The fallout
In an act of censorship usually reserved for the CCP government, this article--including its English translation--began to be scrubbed from the internet, with speculation pointing to the immensely powerful CEO behind ZT. I mean, who else could it be, right?
This article would light the fire of China's first moral panic regarding videogames. In its wake, swift legislation would be enacted regarding internet gaming addiction as well as online proxy gambling. ZT would heed the new laws and remove its lootbox mechanics in the following years and many other similar games followed suit.
Most tragically, the panic (which, to be fair, was fueled by a very real problem) allowed unscrupulous characters such as Yang Yongxin, vice chairman of a hospital in Shandong province, to create "internet addiction centres". With its legitimacy established by a docuseries ("Fighting the Internet Monster") on the state-run television channel CCTV, these centres charged terrified parents exorbitant prices in order to keep teens by force in, essentially, private hospitals and asylums, subjecting them to inhumane conditions and abusive ECT in order to "cure" them of their disease. It was estimated that Yang earned the equivalent of more than $6million USD from his addiction centre in the short space of 2 years. While his centre was eventually closed by state order, he received no punishment of any kind.
As for ZT, it limped on until 2018. A mobile game reboot was made in 2015. A tie-in fantasy movie was released in 2020. it was not very good.

Addendum: how we got here: Of Mice and levers
In the 1950s, an American scientist named BF Skinner discovered the following: when mouse is put in a box with a small lever that, when pressed, dispenses a food pellet, they will quickly learn to start pressing on the lever as fast as possible. If you then stop the food from dispensing, the mouse will lose interest quickly after pressing a few times and seeing no food coming out.
If, however, you hooked up the lever to dispense food at random intervals, the mouse will be practically glued to the lever and hammer on it nonstop, sometimes long after they become full, and long after any food has been dispensed.
This discovery, known as variable outcome operant conditioning, formed the foundation of our understanding of addiction and gambling. Skinner would go on to try and fail to make bombs guided by pigeons, but we're not interested in that here. His research tool--the Skinner Box--would become a descriptor you may have come across when discussing exploitive game mechanics.
Summary
Once upon a time, a game combined the random outcome of videogaming with real-money gambling. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.

Alright Kids.
I’m 31 years old, and I look back on the last 11-13 years and wanted to share some financial advice, advice I wish I received from my parents or teachers when I was in high school. This is a little letter to my teenage self, and I think you will all find a lot of great ideas.
I look back and realized if someone would had told me the following, my life would be very different. I have been very successful throughout my life but was never taught how to invest money.
Investing is not for old people, it’s not for people in their 30’s and 40’s. It’s for you, on your 18th birthday.
When you turn 18, you are legally able to invest money for your future. On your 18th birthday, you should be opening an investment account.
For example, let’s pretend it was 5 years ago. On your 18th birthday, you had $1000 dollars saved. Let’s say you bought the following stocks, with your $1000 evenly across them (these are all examples that are high growth areas that I have looked at and invested into).
-CrowdStrike (Cybersecurity used by big companies)
-AMD (Computer parts)
-NVIDIA (Computer parts)
-Netflix
-Zoom
-Okta (Security for big businesses)
-Trade Desk
-Zynga (Digital Games company)
Tesla
If you put $1000 dollars across all these shares evenly, and then put in 10 dollars a month by year 5 you would be sitting on $73,000. By year 7 you would be sitting on almost $400,000. By year 10 it would be worth $4.84 million dollars. This is all based on 5 years of past market data.
All up you would have invested $2190, and in return in a decade if you kept investing every month that 10 dollars, and never touched the original $1000, you would be worth almost 5 million dollars. Imagine being 30 years old and having $5 million to then be able to invest responsibly even further… you would be able to work part time in a job you loved and didn’t hate, and just enjoy life.
Now the past is NOT an indication of the future – but the point of this exercise is to show you if you are smart and invest in big and emerging companies like Apple, Netflix, Trade Desk, NVIDIA etc, over just a mid-long periods of time you could very well retire in your 30’s and live debt free for the rest of your life
PEOPLE DON’T TEACH YOU ABOUT MONEY BECAUSE THEY WANT YOU TO WORK FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE.
The education system is set up in a way to try and enslave you into work for the rest of your life. Don’t let that happen to you. If you be smart in your 20’s, you will be set for the rest of your life. They want you to slave away in a job that doesn’t pay you well, to retire with benefits that they will eventually take away from you. Don’t let the system do that to you. The dickheads on wall street also make it sound far too complicated and scary for an average person to get involved in. They will throw around terms that you don’t know, and it's all to try and confuse the sh!t out of you. They want to make money, and they want you to work the minimum hour job so that company can keep making huge profits of your misery.
My advice is to read read read. Read and learn how the stock market & shares work in companies. Learn about dividends that companies pay you every month for just investing in their company. Learn about taxes and how it could affect you.
YES – this stuff can be boring to read, and you might not find it very exiting as hours of scrolling on TikTok or Reddit…. But your future self will thank you (and maybe thank me).
Watch an hour of CNBC every week and get to know what they are talking about with financial news. You might find it painfully boring, but really listen. Listen to what they are talking about with trends. Listen to what’s happening in the world of financial markets. Watch the opening bell program at 9:30am Eastern and learn how it works, and what they are talking about. LISTEN LISTEN LISTEN. Take Notes.
Read a website called Motley Fool. Read Market Watch. Read Yahoo Financial.
Watch interview Youtube with Warren Buffet. Listen to what that guy has to say – he has amassed one of the greatest fortunes on earth from simply reading, and understanding how companies work, and investing in the right ones.
DO NOT look at your stocks and shares every single day. There WILL be days you see them go down, but just remember that you are not worried about this, you are looking at years from now. It is scary to see a stock drop 5% on a day and your money vanish. Just remember – it is only a LOSS when you sell. You have not lost a CENT until you press that sell button.
BUY LOW, SELL HIGH. ALWAYS.
BUY IN BIG NAMES
There is a lot of “experts” out there that will try and tell you about this great new stock and its very low and it’s about to explode. These are called penny stocks – go see Wolf of Wall Street to learn more.
These are super risky stocks that will skyrocket only a small percentage of the time. There is SO much money to be made in a 10-year window if you invest in just the safe big companies. Don’t be a schmuck and put 1000’s into a company selling its stocks for $1.98.
Be smart, play it safe and you will increase your odds of that goal of having a million in the bank by a large percentage. Yes it might take an extra 4 or 5 years, but in the grand scheme of things would you rather that then lose all your money to a scam company that goes bankrupt?
There is a thing now called “fractional shares” which means for the big boy stocks like Amazon, you can own just a small percentage of a share. That means you will still get some performance of a single share of amazon, but just on your fraction. If you keep putting your 10 dollars a month evenly across your shares, you will slowly grow your share amounts.
For example. I have .8943 of a stock in Amazon. It is worth 2,264, where a full stock is worth 3,198. I have slowly built this up over the last month and already my investment is up $133 dollars or 6.26%. I have put a little bit of money every day into this stock, and every day it goes towards my goals.
This is an amazing time to be alive for young people & investing. You can put even just a few dollars per week towards a big expensive stock like Amazon, Google etc. – and still earn the same rate of reward as the big-time investors. And you can do it from your phone or computer!
DO NOT USE WALLSTREET AS A CASINO. DO NOT BET IT ALL ON 1 SINGLE STOCK. Spread your money out over 15 -20 stocks. Look at what some of those websites I mentioned are talking about. Read the forecast for the future. Learn what the companies make and do. Think logically – what could this product / industry do in 5-10 years time.
That’s pretty much it guys. I just wanted to really write something that I wish I read when I was 15 -18. I regret not knowing how stocks worked until last year. I regret not being more in-tune with financial news, but I am trying to make up for it now.
Don’t be like me. Start putting that 10 dollars a month, 5 dollars per week, whatever you can afford towards your future by the time you hit 30 – you will be in such a wonderful position.
Just remember – THEY DON’T WANT YOU TO KNOW HOW TO INVEST / WHAT TO INVEST IN & MAKE IT SEEM SCARY BECAUSE THEY WANT YOU TO WORK YOUR 9-5 JOB FOR UNTIL YOU TURN 70. Don’t let the bastards do that to you.
On a more personal note - since this is kind of like a letter to my self. Things get better. As a kid that was bullied, harassed & tormented through High School... if you put your head down, you just work hard, amazing things can and will happen. Be your beautiful individual self. Don't chase those who don't want you. You will find your place in the world, it just takes some time.
I didn't have much of a future when I was your age, but I found my passion in life and I was able to build a pretty cool life out of it and was able to travel the world and have visited over 90 countries. Keep that chin up, keep smiling, and know that you are loved, cherished, and valued. You have SO much to contribute to the world, and you will. Don't let the bad guys win.

Are these autistic reasons to think Zynga will exceed earnings tomorrow?

-Think about all the old people who were locked up in March not being able to go to the casino. I’m guessing many of them turned to those online free slots.
-Weekly home poker games being replaced by zynga poker and zoom.
-Coworkers playing games in office happy hours to stay connected.
-People in general just being locked up and bored.
I know earnings likely just got a pump for the month of March for these reasons but I still think it’s enough to really put them over the top. They also just partnered with Amazon recently on something which I think will help their share price.

They want to make money, and they want you to work the minimum hour job so that company can keep making huge profits of your misery.
My advice is to read read read. Read and learn how the stock market & shares work in companies. Learn about dividends that companies pay you every month for just investing in their company. Learn about taxes and how it could affect you.
YES – this stuff can be boring to read, and you might not find it very exiting as hours of scrolling on TikTok or Reddit…. But your future self will thank you (and maybe thank me).

These are super risky stocks that will skyrocket only a small percentage of the time. There is SO much money to be made in a 10-year window if you invest in just the safe big companies. Don’t be a schmuck and put 1000’s into a company selling its stocks for $1.98.
Be smart, play it safe and you will increase your odds of that goal of having a million in the bank by a large percentage. Yes it might take an extra 4 or 5 years, but in the grand scheme of things would you rather that then lose all your money to a scam company that goes bankrupt?
There is a thing now called “fractional shares” which means for the big boy stocks like Amazon, you can own just a small percentage of a share. That means you will still get some performance of a single share of amazon, but just on your fraction. If you keep putting your 10 dollars a month evenly across your shares, you will slowly grow your share amounts.
For example. I have .8943 of a stock in Amazon. It is worth 2,264, where a full stock is worth 3,198. I have slowly built this up over the last month and already my investment is up $133 dollars or 6.26%. I have put a little bit of money every day into this stock, and every day it goes towards my goals.
This is an amazing time to be alive for young people & investing. You can put even just a few dollars per week towards a big expensive stock like Amazon, Google etc. – and still earn the same rate of reward as the big-time investors. And you can do it from your phone or computer!
DO NOT USE WALLSTREET AS A CASINO. DO NOT BET IT ALL ON 1 SINGLE STOCK. Spread your money out over 15 -20 stocks. Look at what some of those websites I mentioned are talking about. Read the forecast for the future. Learn what the companies make and do. Think logically – what could this product / industry do in 5-10 years time.
That’s pretty much it guys. I just wanted to really write something that I wish I read when I was 15 -18. I regret not knowing how stocks worked until last year. I regret not being more in-tune with financial news, but I am trying to make up for it now.
Don’t be like me. Start putting that 10 dollars a month, 5 dollars per week, whatever you can afford towards your future by the time you hit 30 – you will be in such a wonderful position.

I didn't have much of a future when I was your age, but I found my passion in life and I was able to build a pretty cool life out of it and was able to travel the world and have visited over 90 countries. Keep that chin up, keep smiling, and know that you are loved, cherished, and valued. You have SO much to contribute to the world, and you will. Don't let the bad guys win.

Are these valid reasons to think ZNGA will exceed earnings expectations tomorrow?

-Think about all the elderly people who were locked up in March not being able to go to the casino. I’m guessing many of them turned to those online free slots.
-Weekly home poker games being replaced by zynga poker and zoom.
-Coworkers playing games in office happy hours to stay connected.
-People in general just being locked up and bored playing words with friends and whatnot.
I know earnings likely just got a pump for the month of March for these reasons but I still think it’s enough to really put them over the top. They also just partnered with Amazon recently on something which I think will help their share price. Thoughts?

I’m 31 years old, and I look back on the last 11-13 years and wanted to share some financial advice, advice I wish I received from my parents or teachers when I was in high school. This is a little letter to my teenage self, and I think you will all find a lot of great ideas.
I look back and realized if someone would had told me the following, my life would be very different. I have been very successful throughout my life but was never taught how to invest money.
Investing is not for old people, it’s not for people in their 30’s and 40’s. It’s for you, on your 18th birthday.
When you turn 18, you are legally able to invest money for your future. On your 18th birthday, you should be opening an investment account.
For example, let’s pretend it was 5 years ago. On your 18th birthday, you had $1000 dollars saved. Let’s say you bought the following stocks, with your $1000 evenly across them (these are all examples that are high growth areas that I have looked at and invested into).
• ⁠-CrowdStrike (Cybersecurity used by big companies) • ⁠-AMD (Computer parts) • ⁠-NVIDIA (Computer parts) • ⁠-Netflix • ⁠-Zoom • ⁠-Okta (Security for big businesses) • ⁠-Trade Desk • ⁠-Zynga (Digital Games company) • ⁠Tesla
If you put $1000 dollars across all these shares evenly, and then put in 10 dollars a month by year 5 you would be sitting on $73,000. By year 7 you would be sitting on almost $400,000. By year 10 it would be worth $4.84 million dollars. This is all based on 5 years of past market data.
All up you would have invested $2190, and in return in a decade if you kept investing every month that 10 dollars, and never touched the original $1000, you would be worth almost 5 million dollars. I referred the website to my irl best friend who also plays poker professionally. Now as online poker has recently been banned in Australia this seemed like a good opportunity to play poker for something that was actually worth more than playchips on zynga or facebook. the games where soft, the cashout process was decent (although at times it did take a while) and the software was decent.
During a small session this morning i was booted offline mid hand and to my surprise had recieved an IP ban! i private messaged the site owner who proceeded to tell me that me and my irl friends account had been playing from the same IP address and been colluding, now not only is this impossible because you cannot log into two accounts at the same time, but when i had logged out of my account in the past to try and transfer gold from account to account it wont even allow me to LOG IN for 30-60 minutes due to using a different account from the same IP address let alone have them both logged in at the same time to use together.
I asked the site owner what proof he had of this accused cheating as this was an absurd accusation to make about somebody who has been a poker player for years and plays 5+ times a week at the casino in sydney, tracking sessions and is a long term winning player that i would need to cheat to win runescape gold. The proof i was sent was a screenshot of me and my friend playing at the same table from DIFFERENT houses. Is this against the rules? ofcourse not! games rarely ran higher than $100 so when one did run i would call up my friend and tell him there was action at $200 or $400 tables and we would both play. I won pots from him, he won pots from me i made tight folds to him and he made tight folds to me.
I often used his account when the cashier had no stock to cash out (which was very often) and a good game was running and i was out of funds on my account, This also is not against runebets rules or TOS. This is a way for Blizzard to balance matches, has nothing to do with skill, it's all giving the illusion of "worthy challenge" since there is no way of gauging skill (there is little to none), it has to match games in a balance of chance between someone who was too lucky, too successful with his deck or too unlucky. This why everything in this game like every other Blizzard game is heavily dependant on servers and little is done on client side. One is security, the other is rigged RNG. This is exactly why there are no stats in this game, Blizzard doesn't want its players to figure out the mechanics of MM and tilting games by controlling RNG. For any professional Esport player, this should have been a red flag from the start.

Each draw is being manipulated dependant on what cards each player has and what's on the board and depending on your win rate you get higher or lower chance than the median to draw the right counter. It's just pure math and that side log of card history isn't there for fun, Blizzard collects all the meta and the algos do the rest. We already know MM is not RNG in SC2 and Diablo 3 drops are controlled by input. All this luckily was explained by Diablo devs that they wanted a balance of controlled RNG but not enough to make it too easy to get the items you want. Notice each time using kadala or you missing a rare item, if you gamble for it, the likeliness of that type of drops in game from monster is more often.
