Yesterloo - Pt 4 - Bridgeport Casino

Hope everyone is enjoying their summer. Here today to post about the Bridgeport Casino - not a ton of photos, so bear with me.
Waterloo and Berlin were thought to be prudish around the early/mid 1900s, and Bridgeport thought to be a little wild. So if you wanted to do some drinking and have fun, you'd head to Bridgeport.
If you read my last post, you'll know you could take the Berlin and Bridgeport Electric Railway into Bridgeport. Who was an owner of the railway other than Mr. W. Breithaupt, who not only wanted to see the success of the railway, but wanted to bring people into Bridgeport. That's how Riverside Park and the Bridgeport Casino were conceived.
The "casino" pavilion was built around 1903 and looked like this. As it grew, it boasted entertainment features like a bowling alley, shooting gallery, picnic space, rollerskating, etc. It was not a casino in the gambling sense, although that probably happened secretly, too. It was primarily a dance hall with polished wood floors so shiny you could slide from one end to the other. A 40 foot stairway led people down to a cable-operated ferry, for more fun like fishing and swimming aside the Grand. This article has some additional description and photos.
Other fun stuff to take place: a rope-walker who crossed the Grand in the dark on a lit rope; rifle shooting competitions; replays of the Kentucky Derby...
Back to that gambling bit - in 1962, several people were brought to trial over running a gaming house at the casino, secretly providing alcohol, strippers and gambling to rented parties.
In the 40s, streetcar service to Bridgeport ended and although the casino and park were not sold, the name sort of died. It was owned by several different people over those years, but kept the use of a hall for dances and weddings with the exception of being a slipper manufacturer in the 30s. Interesting change.
That lasted until the mid-70s, when it was bought up by a dishwasher who turned it into... Golf's Steak House! The place that takes you back in time, with an exceptional view of the Grand to boot. That may help to visualize the casino. Pretend you're at a raucous 1915 dance party next time you cut into your steak :)

MOVIE GUIDE
10 CLOVERFIELD LANE - A young woman (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) is forced to cope with her new life after waking up from a nearly fatal accident in this thriller from director Dan Trachtenberg. After narrowly avoiding serious injuries in a car wreck, Michelle (Winstead) awakens in the care of a man who claims to have found her at the scene, and who brought her to his home after a catastrophic chemical attack devastated the surrounding area.
BARBERSHOP: THE NEXT CUT - In this sequel, Calvin (Ice Cube), Eddie (Cedric the Entertainer), and the rest of the crew at the barbershop are now working alongside a number of female hairdressers. Soon, they are all forced to band together to help save their failing neighborhood.
BATMAN VS SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE - Batman (Ben Affleck) and Superman (Henry Cavill) clash over differing philosophies about what kind of heroism is needed to protect the world, while the public they're defending is becoming increasingly mindful of the damage that superheroes and masked vigilantes cause. However, the duo are soon forced to confront an even greater threat created by nefarious billionaire Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg).
THE BOSS - Hugely successful businesswoman Michelle Darnell (Melissa McCarthy) is convicted of insider trading and sentenced to prison. After being released, she is forced to move in with a long-suffering employee of hers (Kristen Bell), and tries to earn redemption and revamp her public image by helping a group of young girls in their quest to sell brownies.
CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR - In this superhero epic, the denizens of the Marvel Universe are forced to pick sides when Captain America (Chris Evans) and Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) come to blows over ideological differences. After a mission involving a new Avengers squad led by Cap ends with several civilian casualties in Lagos, the team are asked to sign an agreement that would force them to take orders from a United Nations panel. Tony Stark (aka Iron Man) pressures Cap to accept this new arrangement, in part because he feels deeply guilty about his own past recklessness; Captain America, however, fears that the Avengers will only be corrupted by bureaucracy. Their disagreement eventually escalates into all-out war when Cap's old friend Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), now a brainwashed assassin known as the Winter Soldier, reenters the picture.
EVERYBODY WANTS SOME!! - Following the success of Bernie and Boyhood, writer-director Richard Linklater is back with his long-anticipated spiritual sequel to Dazed and Confused. Set in Texas during the 1980s, Everybody Wants Some!! is a sublime hangout movie built around the shenanigans of cocky yet endearing college baseball players, who are played by a superb, fresh-faced ensemble cast.
GREEN ROOM - This taut and exhilarating horror-thriller follows a young punk rock band, The Ain't Rights, on their way to a last-minute gig at a divey club in the backwoods of Oregon. They arrive to find an audience of neo-Nazis. After their inflammatory set, The Ain't Rights encounter something they weren't supposed to see and are soon forced to face off against the club's owner (a terrifying Patrick Stewart) and his henchmen. Who will win? Anton Yelchin, Imogen Poots and Alia Shawkat co-star in this latest film from Ragtag favorite Jeremy Saulnier (Blue Ruin). Fair warning: contains some graphic images.
THE HUNTSMAN: WINTER’S WAR - Freya the Ice Queen (Emily Blunt) brings her sister Ravenna (Charlize Theron) back to life, and the powerful evil siblings plan to conquer the Enchanted Forest. Only the Huntsman (Chris Hemsworth) and his secret lover Sara (Jessica Chastain) can stop them in this sequel continuing the inventive twist on the Snow White fable.
THE JUNGLE BOOK - Jon Favreau directs this stunning reimagining of the classic Rudyard Kipling tale The Jungle Book, Neel Sethi plays the orphaned Mowgli, who's raised in the jungle with the help of talking animals.
KEANU - Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele star in this comedy as two friends posing as drug dealers to get back a stolen cat.
MIDNIGHT SPECIAL - In rural Texas, a father named Roy (Michael Shannon) realizes his young son Alton (Jaeden Lieberher) possesses otherworldly powers. Soon, Roy and Alton find themselves on the run, first from religious extremists and then, once an Amber Alert is issued, from local authorities. Written and directed by Jeff Nichols (Mud), this mysterious and enthralling film recalls Spielberg's science-fiction masterpieces.
MILES AHEAD - In celebration of Jazz Appreciation Month, Ragtag is proud to partner with "We Always Swing" Jazz Series to present Miles Ahead. Don Cheadle directs and stars in this energetic, freewheeling portrait of the iconic musician Miles Davis. Miles Ahead is set in the late 1970s, during Davis’ five-year hiatus. When a persistent Rolling Stone reporter (Ewan McGregor) shows up at his door, Davis brings him on a journey to demand royalty money from his Columbia bosses. Cheadle’s inspired film then morphs into a caper of sorts.
MOTHER’S DAY -This star-studded ensemble comedy tells a series of interlocking stories about motherhood. A divorced mother of two (Jennifer Aniston) falls for a guy with two kids of his own (Jason Sudeikis), a young woman (Britt Robertson) tries to find her biological mom (Julia Roberts), and an overstressed mother (Kate Hudson) is visited by her bickering parents.
RATCHET & CLANK - Join impetuous "lombax" Ratchet (voice of James Taylor Arnold) and his brainy robot sidekick Clank (voice of David Kaye) as they embark on their biggest adventure ever in this irreverent adapation of the Insomniac Games videogame franchise.
