Good games without (bad) in-app purchases.

/NoIAP is a sub for great games without obnoxious or exploitive IAP/freemium monetization and for discussing what we as gamers want gaming to be. We all agree that devs need to make a living, but that they should do so ethically and without hurting the art. So please share your favorites and engage in respectful discussion regarding your views on the current state of gaming monetization.

Great passage from Allan Carr's book about problem gambling, definitely applies to gaming as well

"The gambling addict suffers from a constant tug-of-war. You know something is causing you harm and misery and threatening to destroy your life, yet you feel compelled to go on doing it. Every day the misery gets worse, yet the compulsion to go on gambling gets stronger. You know that the only sensible thing to do is quit, yet you suspect that quitting will be worse than carrying on because you still believe that your addiction gives you some kind of pleasure or crutch."

I know I game to feel happy yet all it does is cause me misery on a much larger scale. It's a complete net negative in my life yet I continue to treat it like a positive when rationalizing if I should continue playing or even go back to playing when I've quit for a while.

Assuming the definition of gambling is: putting up something of value in order to win something of value in a game of chance... at what point, if any, does playing the game Deal or No Deal become gambling?

Need to buy a phone with reliable hardware/timely updates/good ui b/w 20-24k. Also, should 5g be an important factor to consider?

Hi people, Love from India. My previous device was mi a2. The things i liked most in that was :
  1. Timely updates . I got android 10 in like 3 months after it was launched. I am an android dev, so love to try new OS changes
  2. NOTIFICATIONS AND DND : god i miss this so much . I am using a temporary redmi 7s for now . It has the same h/w specs but its os is so much worse . The settings are not categorised correctly and the worse is dnd. My preference for dnd is that i want to attend calls but disable notifications temporarily . In mi a2, it was just a one click thing and all the notifs would hide. On pressing it again will show all the notifications (and any new notifs) again . In miui, the dnd is weird, does not provide the behaviour i desired and most of the times DOESN'T WORK. I can see a twitter notification icon but when i pull the status bar, there isn't any notification. Some apps show notification in lock screen while some don't, and i no longer have the power to control that.
Another problem that comes with notification is that some apps rely onto running in background (technically "foreground services") if their notification is automatically removed by os. And this crap ui exactly does that
3 A reliable hardware: my metallic mi a2 didn't had a scratch on front or back for last 2.5 years . Its os was light enough to run apps smoothly , even on a medium spec sd660. Type C was a rate thing before, but that gamble definitely paid off. My current redmi 7s has a super crappy screen that cuts the status bar from the edges, on time and battery icons
I am also thinking of experimenting with h/w features that I haven't previously experienced, like fast charging devices, devices with amoled screen, and 5g soc chipsets
So my current choices and my concern against those are :
  1. Moto g 5g : heavily inclined to this. But i have heard it takes very long to full charge and also not sure if moto is gonna provide s/w updates as this isn't an android one device. Also one Lenovo phone was my worst phone before so am not sure of its h/w quality
  2. Samsung m51 : not a fan of custom skin but i guess its h/w is top notch. Also i am not sure how good it is with notifications and the DND i so much want. And how good is Samsung with android updates?
  3. Poco x3 : afaik , its a budget version of Samsung m51. But since its miui so i guess it will again irritate me (although it comes with miui12 that i haven't tried yet)
  4. Realme x7 : similar to m51 in terms of h/w but with lesser battery, but am not sure of its software . From what i heard realme ui is similar to stock ui , so i might get my dnd and good notifications. But is realme good with latest software updates ?? Also anyone using realme device for > 2 years? They offer crazy battery charging speeds, is that good for a device?
  5. OnePlus nord : the phone that checks all the boxes but is currently way out of my budget :'(
So any suggestions? I haven't also tried any oppo/vivo phones as their software were super crappy back then. Have they gone any better since then?

So I finally replayed it

Didn’t hate it at first but in honesty, I was rather disappointed. Finally replayed it and dug into all the side content, codex entries and the books and found it thoroughly enjoyable. A solid game, but I understand the criticism of a lack of character control. The characters were actually incredibly enjoyable and developed well, even Liam surprised me, so I don’t understand that criticism at all. Also very excited that the next entry in the series is definitely connecting the two going by Mike Gamble! Definitely had good timing to go back and give it another shot, will definitely be replaying again eventually.

Bundles, Bundles, Bundles!!!

Bundles, Bundles, Bundles!!!
Just wanted to say a few things about the bundles, I've tried to take an impartial view:.

  1. I have bundles myself and I'd be unhappy if I had the crates so I understand the frustration.
  2. I assume that the reason why only some players have bundles is because the Tencent shareholders are trying to minimise the risk of a significant drop in profits this month if the bundles are not successful, so they've hedged their bets by only releasing them to some players.
  3. Testing bundles with only some players also makes it easier for Tencent to reverse their decision and go back to crates if they decide that's best for them (which I highly doubt).
  4. They're not going to say anything about the situation because they don't want to bias the results of their test. So there's absolutely no point in trying to get info from them until the testing is finished.
  5. I already spent quite a lot of cash when I had crates. For example, I bought the entire valentine and colour spectrum lucky draws (and I'm from the UK so I think I pay the highest cost for crates). However, I think in general that I am now spending more (in total) on the bundles.
  6. Because you're getting everything in the bundles it seems like a much better deal, but because crate and lucky draw contents are spread into a few different bundle, the cost mounts up and you don't notice it as much. The high costs of the lucky draws and crates would have put me off buying some of the items that I went ahead and bought just because they were in bundles. The advantage for those without bundles at the moment is that they are probably saving money by not having the temptation available to them.
  7. I'm sure bundles will replace crates. Firstly because they don't fit the 'gambling' definition that I'm sure will cause Tencent more and more problems in the future if they continue with it. But also because I'm sure they'll make more money from the bundles.

So I would suggest that people just hold tight. I know it's frustrating not to have the same deals that are available to other players at the moment but I'm almost certain everyone will have bundles in the end.

Definition of Crafting: To make or manufacture (an object or product) with skill and careful attention to detail. I don't read luck or gambling in there.

Harvest has been the closest we got to that. With the right knowledge you could deterministically and most importantly REALISTICALLY add specific mods to almost any item we found. THAT is crafting, not just spamming the same orb, fossil or essence on one item 1000 times and praying to RNGesus. If I remember correctly, some wise man once said, doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results is the definition of insanity (or something like that lol).
I know something from harvest is probably gonna go core next league and I really hope that they get this right. Looking at previous additions to the core game they are probably just gonna add new exalt orbs with fossil mod restrictions, but one can still hope for the best.
(deterministic resist crafts PLEASE).

Oh yea, they definitely gonna have to patch the Test Your Luck towers. The Boss Towers, Take a Gamble and All Bets Are Off in particular gotta be nerfed

I have been trying to beat the Baraka boss for SEVEN. HOURS.
SEVEN. HOURS.
Yes, with level 3-4 and Jinsei augments in my builds.
This is quite literally the most unfair and overpowered boss NRS has ever put in a Towers mode. They NEED to add another Vulnerability element to the bosses. And when they get down to the Elemental Armor threshold, their moveset NEEDS to be limited. The boss should not be able to Flawless Block or grab you, it's just unfair and out of your control. Look, I get it's Test Your Luck, but at that point it's really based more on luck than skill. At least you can kinda game the A.I; I noticed the A.I. was a bit susceptible to jump-in attacks, and threw out the Berserker Barrage move quite often, which is unsafe so I could Flawless Block it for health using the Breath of Life and Bonus Time Order Krystal augments, then punish. But once the armor goes up, it becomes unbeatable.
I cannot even fathom how this boss would be on Brutal difficult.
