Polyhydra | Battle Dice Game
Polyhydras are powerful and dominating creatures. Whenever two meet in the wild, they fight each other to the death to claim the surrounding territory.
Each round, players secretly choose various combinations of three polyhedral dice, representing their hydra heads, to roll against one another. Attack the enemy by rolling doubles and defend yourself by rolling values higher than the incoming attack. The first player to reduce their opponent’s health to 0 wins the game.
Game Rules
This game's components are 9 polyhedral dice per player and has some simple but interesting mechanics for a battle dice game. The various polyhedral dice offer strengths and weaknesses. Lower sided dice are more consistent but deal less damage, while higher sided dice are less consistent but deal more damage.
If you look at the rules, you'll see down at the bottom that I am considering passive powers based on the set's primary dice color. While a card or token with the passive would be easier to recall, it takes away from the all-dice game allure.

A Polyhedral Dice Game

Hello rpg I was looking for a simple game that could make use of my oversized collection of role playing dice. I didn't really like the ones I found so I attempted to think one up myself.
Following are the rules I came up with. I'm not a game designer so I'm not super confident with this but the test runs I did with my wife went okay and it was kinda fun. I'd love to hear what you guys think.

A Polyhedral Dice Game

Summary

A Polyhedral Dice Game is a dice rolling game for 2 players using polyhedral dice. Players take turns attacking each other until one of them wins.

The tools

Armor Dice Attack Die Damage Die Hit Points
d12+d8 d20 d4 33
Each player gets dice from a polyhedral dice set. They have different uses.
To play comfortably at least two sets of standard role playing dice are needed. To avoid sharing dice each player also needs an additional d8, d10 and d12.

Before the game

Rounds

Each round one player is the attacker while the other is the defender.
  1. The attacker rolls their attack die (a d20) to hopefully make a successful attack. If it is a critical roll (a 20 or a 1) this is dealt with immediately (see Critical roll)
  2. The defender rolls their armor dice (a d12+d8) in hopes to have at least equal the value of the attackers roll which means the defense is succesful. If the defender rolls a 20 (a 12 and an 8) it is an awesome defense which is dealt with immediately (see Awesome defense)
  3. If the attack is defended the round ends. If the attack roll is successful (the attack roll was higher than the defenders) the attacker has the choice to do one of two things.
    1. The attacker may do damage by rolling their damage die. The result of this roll is deducted from the defenders hit points.
    2. The attacker may decide to not do damage but instead upgrade their damage die to the next higher one. (see Upgrade the damage die)
  4. The round ends and the other player becomes the attacker. This is repeated until the hit points of one player are depleted.

Upgrade the damange die

Whenever there is the possibility to upgrade the damage die a player can exchange their damage die (which starts at a d4) with the next higher one. The progression is as follows:

The d12 is the maximum. Players cannot upgrade above a d12. The d4 is the lowest.

Critical attack

Awesome defense

If the defender rolled a 20 (12+8) on their defense roll they may heal (regain hitpoints) by rolling their own damage die adding the result to their hitpoints. Hitpoints can only be regained and may not exceed the starting value.

All or nothing (optional)

When a game is over and both players agree they can have a second go with some slight modifications
This can be extended to a third game with 99 hit points and a maximum of 3d12 in damage dice. Beware that the game might take long and become dull.

My kids have found my polyhedral sets absolutely fascinating, and after lots of searching, I haven't found any games that they are able to play/understand at their age (young elementary), so I made one.
I'd love to introduce you to Polyfight 10, a game for 2 or more players and for ages 4 and up. It requires 10 polyhedral dice: D4, D6, D8, 5-D10s, D12 and D20 per player. Technically, you can use a standard set with 3 additional D10s.
We've played several 4-player games and I think the rules have been sufficiently smoothed-out but I would LOVE feed back from the community here about my game. Fire away and enjoy!

I've worked on a dice golfing game for the last 2 years, where each custom polyhedral is a different club.

All about the custom dice, where each is meant to feel like a different club; the more sides, the farther it travels. Some turn, some are good for getting out of sand, some are bad for trees. I spent a while trying to figure out exactly how to make it feel good, and I think it's pretty different. Design simple modular hex-courses, and race to the green.

What is the history of the polyhedral dice in gaming?

I just had a thought: its odd that only roleplaying games use these non-standard die. Why does D&D use such strange dice? Most board games, and rpgs stick to the standard d6s. Why did d&d use such dice, and when did such dice find their way into gaming? Who first started manufacturing them? Did players just make their own before they were mass produced? Were they invented for use by some long out of print board game? Where did the d20 come from? And yes, I'm aware the dice are based off of the polyhedral solids. I also know the the modern d10 was based off of barrel dice (no idea where those came from either, come to think of it). The original d&d, I've heard, just had you painting 1-10 twice on a blank d20 to use as a d10.

Themed Packages

Hey all, just wondering if I could pick your brains about an idea I had.
I'm on a budget, but for Christmas I really wanted to do something special for my friends, who are also my party members and DM. I thought putting together something like a cute "in universe gift" would be fun- brown paper packages tied up with string and all that. But I can't think of some in-universe ideas for gifts that wouldn't be useless/boring. I'm not gonna wrap up gemstones in leather or spend $200 on antique accessories. I want to make each package have a unique element specific to their characters, but I need base ideas before I can get specific like that.
I had a thought to make homemade bread rolls a day or so before giving the gift, because everyone loves bread, but beyond that...kinda clueless. Any thoughts?
\Notes: I've sworn off candles, mugs (nobody needs another mug), and anything too d&d related like polyhedral dice/gaming accessories.*

Are there advantages to only using d6 dice in a game instead of a set of polyhedral dice?

I am trying to make a tabletop RPG as a summer project. I've been asking people about dice they own, and most said they didn't have polyhedral dice, but that they did have plenty of six-sided dice. I am assuming that this would be the same for a lot of people. Would there be any advantages to using only d6 dice?

Looking for playtesters: micro-game that only uses polyhedral dice

Hey guys,
I'm designing a minimalist dice combat micro-game called Krig. Its main feature is that it can be played with just a set of polyhedral dice per player —no need to print cards, have minis, a board, etc.
The objective of the game is to attack the opponent until their hit points counter gets to 0. During their turn, players perform one of the following actions: attack, defend, heal or power up.
I'm now looking for playtesters that might be interested in playing and giving feedback. The rules are pretty simple (2 minutes to read) and the matches are pretty short (around 5 minutes).

Pokerish Polyhedral Dice Probability

Here is a probability table I made for poker style polyhedral dice games. You throw one each: D4, D6, D8, D12, D20.
My goal was to come up with a set of rolls that progresses exponentially in rarity, and doesn't rely on standard poker terminology, e.g. pairs, full house. I did end up using the "straight" though.
The odds actually approximate an exponential curve better than the standard 5 card poker hands do, so I'm calling it a success.
