Police in Taiwan now allege Power8 used the sponsorships to lure hundreds of investors in Asia into buying shares in the company before disappearing with their money. Emails to Power8 officials bounced back, and a message on its website says operations are temporarily suspended. Espanyol says Power8 is overdue on its sponsorship payments and has started legal action. An Everton spokesman declined to comment.
“The Power8 name was placed next to other big companies on the websites of the football clubs, so people thought it was another international brand,” said Houchih Kuo, a lawyer in Taiwan who is representing some of the investors. Taiwan police last week charged several people with financial fraud and money laundering in relation to Power8.
Once almost solely the domain of airlines, car makers and other household brands, European soccer sponsorship is attracting smaller companies that are harder to vet and might have little in the way of operating history, people in the sports-sponsorship industry say.
The €1.3 billion ($1.5 billion) paid in soccer sponsorships last year included dozens of deals with small online gambling and financial trading companies that used the sport to drive traffic to their websites, according to research by Simon Rines, editorial director at International Marketing Reports Ltd., a sponsorship-analysis firm.
In March, Chelsea Football Club scrapped its “online foreign-exchange partner,” CWM FX, after police raided the currency trader’s London office and arrested 13 people. London police say CWM might have fraudulently raised tens of millions of pounds for investment funds promising 5% monthly returns. An investigation is continuing, and no one has been charged.
“Investors thought this was a company of substance, with a good brand,” said Ian Austin, a lawyer representing investors who put £10 million ($15 million) into CWM funds.
CWM couldn’t be reached, and its executives didn’t respond to requests for comment. A Chelsea spokesman declined to comment.
Three more English soccer teams were left in the lurch earlier this year when the U.K. gambling license of their sponsor, betting company 666BET, was suspended as part of a tax-fraud and money-laundering investigation. Its parent company is being liquidated by KPMG, which said it couldn’t comment because the sports contracts had ended before it took over in July.
“Sports sponsorship lets companies get credibility by aligning with well-established sports brands,” said Stephen Pearson, chief executive of sports marketing agency Sports Media Gaming Ltd. Mr. Pearson said “everything looked good on paper” for the Chelsea-CWM FX deal, which he helped to arrange.
“If Chelsea hadn’t done it, another club might have jumped into the space and taken the deal off of them,” Mr. Pearson said.
When Power8 approached Espanyol about a partnership last year, the company, registered in Costa Rica and Spain, didn’t appear to have any business activities beyond a slick website, club officials said. But Power8’s representative in Spain told them that operations would be ramped up soon and arranged an upfront payment of €8 million, the Espanyol officials said.
The team held a 10-minute light show to inaugurate the Power8 Stadium in August last year before an Espanyol match against Sevilla Futbol Club. A welcome message was lighted in Chinese.
Asian online message boards had buzzed about Power8 for months. The company offered investors shares paying weekly dividends of 2%. Mr. Kuo, the lawyer for some investors, estimates Power8 received about $300 million in all from investors across China, Taiwan, Indonesia and other Asian countries.
Large investors were rewarded with trips to the stadium to see Espanyol square up against globally known players such as Lionel Messi and Luis Suárez, according to Taiwan police and Mr. Kuo. Others were taken on trips to the Thai resort of Phuket, where smiling investors were photographed holding up a Power8 banner.
Andy Korman, a sports-law partner at Couchmans LLP, said clubs might grow wary about signing lesser-known sponsors after the recent incidents.
But he said partnerships with new online brands are bringing in needed revenue for teams to boost their earnings beyond ticket sales and leaguewide broadcasting deals.
“Even if you know you should look closely, do you want to turn down the money and be left behind?” he said.
