I live in a small mining town in the mountains of Colorado. Someone is building a massive casino nearby, Pictures Included

I grew up in a small mountain town named Eureka. It was founded in the late 1800s during the gold rush, but after the mines dried up the town began its slow descent into decay. Half the houses are empty or abandoned now.
You can see a picture of the kind of houses here in Eureka:
First house
Second house
When a massive construction project began nearby, it was the talk of the town for weeks. Why would they build something in a sleepy dying town like Eureka? It wasn’t until my sister Selene talked to a few construction workers that we discovered they were building a casino.
A casino up in the mountains, over two hours away from Denver. None of us could understand why they’d chosen here of all places. After a few months of work, the casino was done.
I took a picture of the town with the completed casino in the background to the right. The ten-story-structure sticks out like a sore thumb off in the distance.
Town+Casino
After the casino opened, they hired a few dozen members of the town, offering high paying jobs to work as dealers or cleaning staff. I was already employed as a firefighter, but my sister Selene got a job as a blackjack dealer. She’s a widow with two young kids, so the paycheck was a real lifesaver.
Still, something about the situation seemed too good to be true. The jobs over there paid far too well, and the management was far too accommodating. The fire station where I work is located high on a hill overlooking the town, so I began watching the casino from a distance each day.
I had initially thought that the casino was located in a terrible location, but I was apparently wrong. True, Eureka was hours from any major city, but despite that, a bus full of people arrived every morning and left every evening.
One night I was over at my parent’s house and had dinner with Selene and her kids. I asked her about her experience as a dealer.
“It’s Ok,” she said. “Just a little boring I guess.”
“Boring?” I asked. “I’m surprised you don’t have your hands full.”
“Why’s that?” she asked. “It’s like you said, Eureka’s too small. I never have people playing cards. The casino is almost always completely empty.”
I wasn’t sure what to make of that. If the place was always empty, what happened to the people who I’d seen arriving on buses? “I’ve been keeping an eye on the building,” I said. “A bus full of people typically arrives around 9 AM every day.”
“Really?” she asked, looking confused. “If that’s true, I’ve never seen them.
“I can see it from the fire station,” I said. “If you head out for a smoke break at 9 AM, you’ll probably see them arriving.”
“Interesting,” she said. “I’ll do that. If they’re being processed for their organs or something, I’ll let you know.” She laughed.
“Har har,” I said sarcastically.
The next night she sent me a text calling me over. When I arrived, she was nearly breathless with excitement.
“Orin, You were right,” she said. “A big group of people did arrive, but they didn’t walk into my part of the casino. Instead, they all walked into an elevator at the back of the building. I’m not sure where that goes.” She looked thoughtful. “It was weird. They looked… How can I say it? Desperate? Something about the whole situation was very off. I’m gonna check out the elevator tomorrow.”
I told her to be careful, though, to be honest, I was excited to hear about what she discovered. When I visited my parent’s house the next night, I found her two kids there alone. They told me that Selene had never returned from work.
I called all her friends, then all our neighbors, but no one had seen her since she left for work that morning. Our conversations regarding the casino flooded my mind, then a plan began to form.
Early the next morning I walked across town in my nicest pair of jeans and a button-up shirt. I pushed through the door to the casino and saw that Selene wasn’t lying. The place was all but deserted. Three dozen slot machines crowded the walls surrounding a few tables interspersed throughout the floor of the casino. The only players in the whole building were Bob and Donald, two locals.
I walked up to a nearby table where Bridget, a girl I’d gone to high school with, was shuffling cards. She broke into a grin when she saw me. “Hey Orin, you here for a few rounds of blackjack?”
“I wish,” I said. “No, I’m here to ask about Selene. She never made it home last night.”
Bridget’s expression darkened. “Really? Have you asked around?”
“I already called around. Have you seen her?”
She shook her head. “No, our schedules rarely line up. I’ll be sure to let you know if I--” Her eyes focused on something behind me, and she cut herself off.
I turned around to see the casino’s pit boss watching us both. He was a tall thin man in an impeccably clean black suit. When I turned back towards Bridget, she was looking down at the table and shuffling cards absent-mindedly.
“Well, if you hear anything, let me know,” I said.
She nodded, so I turned around and headed for the pit boss. I stuck out my hand. The temperature of his hand was so hot that I had to pull my hand away after a few seconds.
“Have… have you seen my sister Selene?” I asked. “She hasn’t been seen since her shift here yesterday.”
He smiled. “Sir, this floor is for players. You’re more than welcome to head to the tellers for chips, but barring that I’m afraid I’ll have to ask you to leave.”
I stared at him for a long second before stalking towards the door. When I looked back, he was talking with Bridget.
I checked my watch. 8:55 AM, just as I’d planned. I walked around the back of the building and waited as the morning bus pulled around the building. I waited for the telltale hiss of the opening doors and the sound of people descending before I rounded the corner and joined the crowd. None of them paid any particular attention to me as I walked with them into the casino.
The crowd walked through a side door down a hallway to an elevator. Small groups of people entered the elevator as the rest of us waited for our turn. I shot a glance at the casino patrons, surprised at their diversity. There seemed to be people from all different countries and ethnicities. I heard one speaking Japanese and another speaking what sounded like an African language.
My turn came along with a few other patrons in the elevator. A sickly woman hobbled into the elevator beside me carrying an IV that was still connected to one of her veins. We piled in and rode up to the top.
The elevator rose for a few long seconds. I wasn’t sure what I would find, but I steeled myself for something horrible. The elevator’s speaker let out a TING, then the doors opened.
We all walked out onto what looked like a standard casino. Another few dozen slot machines ringed the walls, but on this floor, they were almost all occupied by customers. I took in the scene, confused at why they’d have a ground floor that was almost completely empty when this place was almost--
Selene was dealing cards at a nearby table.
I jogged over and sat down at an open seat. None of the players around me paid me much attention.
“Selene!” I said. “Are you OK? Did you spend the night here last night?”
Her eyes were glassy and confused. She looked up at me with a dumb expression and didn’t respond to my question.
“Selene?” I asked.
“What’s your bet?” she asked me. “This table is for blackjack players only.”
“I…” I trailed off, looking at the players around me. None of them were betting with chips of any kind. “What’s the minimum bet?” I asked.
“Three years,” she responded.
“Three years then,” I said, not knowing what that referred to.
Selene nodded, then began dealing cards. I shot a look down at my hand. King and a 9. Selene dealt out cards for herself, showing a 9. I stood, then leaned forward again. “Should I call the police? Are you--”
“Congratulations,” she said tonelessly.
An almost impossibly warm hand grabbed my shoulder. I spun to see the pit boss I’d spoken to earlier. He gave an impressed smile. “Orin, was it? I’m impressed, truly. Would you mind if I had a word with you?”
I shot a look back at Selene who was dealing the next round of cards. Then I got to my feet, balling my hands into fists. “What did you do to her?”
The pit boss clasped his hands behind his back. “Nothing more, and nothing less than what I’m going to do to you. That is, offer you the chance to play.”
“What the hell is that supposed to mean?”
The pit boss nodded his head towards a nearby slot machine. A woman in a wheelchair pulled a lever and watched the flashing numbers spin. They exploded in a cacophony of sirens and flashing lights. “WINNER WINNER WINNER!” The machine screeched.
The woman in the wheelchair put her feet on the ground and stood up on a pair of wobbly legs that had clearly never been used before.
“As in any other casino,” the pit boss said, “you must wager for the chance to win.”
“She... won the use of her legs?” I asked, feeling light-headed. “Wait,” I said. “I played blackjack just now. ‘Three years,’ Selene told me. What does ‘three years’ mean?” I asked.
“Three years of life, of course. Did you win?”
My mouth felt dry. “I-- Yes, I won.”
He smiled warmly. “Congratulations. I hope you enjoy them. I can tell you from personal experience that watching the decades pass is a bore. Give it some time and you’ll be back to spend them.”
I watched the pit boss’s face. He couldn’t have been more than a few years older than me, and I was in my early thirties. I looked around at the casino. No one was playing with chips of any kind. “So what?” I asked. “I won years of life. That woman won the use of her legs. What else can a person win here?”
“Oh, almost anything. They can win almost anything you can imagine.”
A cold feeling settled in my stomach. “And what do they wager?”
His eyes flashed with greed. “Almost anything. They can wager almost anything you can possibly imagine. Anything equal in value to the item they want in return.” He nodded towards a nearby roulette table.
A man stood by the table, cradling his hands. “Another finger,” he called out. He only had three fingers remaining on his left hand. As I watched, the ball came to a stop, and another finger disappeared from his left hand.
The pit boss extended his hands. “Feel free to try any of our games. Bet and win whatever you’d like.” He reached out and snatched my hand. A feeling of intense warmth passed up my arm to my chest. “There,” he said. “I’ve even given you some house money to get you started. An extra decade of life, on me.”
I ripped my hand away, staring at him in horror. Then I looked back at Selene. Something clicked in my mind. “You offered her the chance to play. What did she want?” I asked.
“Her husband,” the pit boss said. “Quite the sad story. He died two years ago. She wanted him brought back to her.”
“What did she wager?” I asked.
“She wanted the chance to win a soul, the most valuable object in existence. I’m sure you can imagine what she needed to wager for the chance to win it. What she wagered is unimportant. The important question is: What do you want, Orin?”
I stared at Selene with a flat expression. “I’m sure you can imagine.”
His eyes flashed with greed again. “How wonderful. The casino could always make use of another dealer. Feel free to make your wager at any one of our games; I’ll be eagerly awaiting the results of your night. Oh, and do take advantage of our waitresses. We always supply food and drink for ‘high rollers’.” He walked away.
I spent the next few hours trying to decide which game to play. I was going to be wagering my soul, so I wanted the highest chance possible. Slots and roulette were out. I’d done some reading online about counting cards, so I figured that blackjack gave me the best odds.
I walked up to Selene’s table and sat down. “Bet?” she asked with that same toneless voice. “Three years,” I said.
I spent the next hour or so doing my best to remember how to count cards. I knew that low cards added one to my count and high cards decreased it by one, but the casino used three decks. I had read something about how that was supposed to change my calculation, but I couldn’t quite remember how.
Every time I won a hand, I cursed myself for not putting everything on the line. Every time I lost, I breathed a prayer of thanks that I’d waited. And all the while, I kept track of the count.
I had lost fifteen years of life when the count finally reached +5.
“Bet?” Selene asked.
“I wager my soul so you can be free,” I said.
The table around me fell silent. Selene’s eyes flickered, but she showed no other emotion as she dealt the cards. I watched my first card, punching the air in excitement when I saw a Jack. My excitement turned to ash when my second card was a four. Fourteen.
I looked at her hand. One card was facedown, but the faceup card was a King. I swore loudly, staring down at my hands.
“Hit?” she asked. The entire table was silently watching me.
“Hit,” I said, not looking down. The table erupted in cheers. I looked down to see a 7 atop my two other cards. 21. Blackjack.
I looked at Selene who flipped over her facedown card to reveal a 9. 19. I won.
The glassy look left her eyes immediately. She looked around in surprise, then her eyes locked on mine. “Orin?” she asked, then almost immediately began to cry. The entire casino broke out in cheers.
I grabbed her hand and headed for the elevator. The doors had begun to close when the pit boss reached out with a hand to stop them.
“Congratulations,” he said, beaming. He seemed to be honestly excited.
“Shouldn’t you be upset?” I asked.
“Not at all. Casinos love it when we have big winners. It inspires the other players to make larger bets. I imagine I’ll gain two or three dealers before the night is through from your performance.”
“Great,” I said flatly. “Now let us go.”
“Not yet,” he said. “You didn’t just win, Orin. You got a blackjack. And blackjack pays out 1.5 times your bet. You won your sister’s soul and more.”
I stared, not sure what to say. “What are you saying? I won half a soul extra?”
The pit boss grinned wildly. “Just remember what I said. You’ll find living for decades and decades to be a boring experience. After a few centuries, you’ll be back to gamble that half a soul away. Congratulations!”
He removed his hand, and the elevator doors slammed shut.
I helped Selene back to her house. Her children were relieved. I watched them cry, then moved into the kitchen to start making dinner.
It’s been a few days since that experience. The casino is still out there, and buses full of people still arrive. I… I cut my hand pretty bad a few days later. When I checked it an hour later, it had already healed, no scar or anything. I’m not sure exactly what I won at that casino, but there’s no way I’m ever going back.

Rough Night at The Running Bear Casino (PAGE 1 of 2)

…The raging river, pulled them down.
Now they’ll always, be together,
In that Happy Hunting Ground…
- Running Bear by Sonny James
“Snakeyes! New roller, please, next up.” The game runner raked in the dice and chips and ignored the despair in the countenance of the most recent “high roller”. Ted shook his head and other people crowded him away from the dice pit. He was almost out of funds and it was still early. He’d budgeted his, “loss level” carefully to maximize his time at the reservation casino. It was an older one, filled with stereotypical paintings and statues intended to honor the local First Nations Tribes while fulfilling the expectations of rude tourists. He looked around forlornly for a new game to play. He didn’t care for the slots or the drawn-out and ever-shifting card games… ah, Blackjack! There was an opening at the table.
He rushed over before anyone else could snag it and bustled onto the chair. “Okay to deal me in on the next hand?” He interrupted the dealer, who ignored him until he was done dealing out the rest of the players and raking in the chips. He still did not speak but once Ted placed the minimum bet, he flipped a card down in front of him and the game began. Ted immediately started winning the straightforward game. He picked up most of his losses from his unfortunate run at craps and was finally enjoying himself. The couple at the far end of the table had apparently had enough and didn’t care for the new player. Ted liked to talk to new people and thought he was good at it. Before long, the other players had left and it was down to him, the dealer, and an older man, who wore a black cowboy style hat and chain-smoked thin cigarillos.
Ted, grinning heartily at his latest win, glanced over at the man, who had just fired up his next cancer-stick, “You know casinos, and a few bars are the last public places where anyone smokes. I remember when there were smoking sections at most places and my parents told me that there used to be no restrictions. I’ll bet you get plenty of pressure to stop from your family and friends. It’s a pretty bad habit for your long-term health…” Ted usually rambled on past any non-verbal cues that people might give him to stop talking, yet his diatribe came to a screeching halt at the look with which the stern-faced elder favored him.
The older man drew in a long pull on the firestick and then exhaled the stinking cloud into Ted’s face. He coughed a little and gagged at the odor of the raw blend of tobacco and chemicals. The old one removed the cigarillo from his mouth and tapped ashes onto the edge of the table and down onto the floor at his toes, “Sonny, nobody cares. Nobody wants your opinion, and you are not special, no matter what your mommy told you. I’ll do as I please and if you don’t like it, go bother people at another table.”
Ted gaped in shock. In his mind, the man’s words verged on an “assault”. He looked helplessly at the dealer, who just ducked his head and tried not to laugh. Indignant, he rose, took his pile of chips and fled into the depths of the gaming house in search of a friendlier table. He didn’t find one that he liked, so he finally gave up and sat at the bar. The bartender seemed to ignore him in favor of tidying up her workspace. He cleared his throat and received only a glance. He mumbled as much to himself as to her, “I just want a drink while I wait for a table to open.” He wondered at her stony silence, maybe she resents me for being…
His vocal ruminations were interrupted by a feminine voice, “What do you want?”
Ted looked up to see the bartender, mocking smile in place below shining, mesmerizing eyes. Ted simply gaped and eventually worked his jaw uselessly. The bartender shrugged and walked back to the other end of the bar. She spoke with a large man who was clearly part of the security team. He glared at Ted while she spoke. Ted wanted to avoid a confrontation. He’d been conditioned that he should seek authorities if such a situation loomed. Yet casino security was the only available authority here locally. There were Tribal Police on the Reservation, but he wasn’t sure they would want to listen to him. He finally shrugged and decided to go back over to the hotel for the rest of the night. This trip had been very unsatisfying… like all those he’d taken since he moved away from his parents’ home a few years previously.
There was an indoor walkway to the hotel, but Ted decided to go by the outdoor route to get some fresh air and enjoy the natural beauty that the builders had incorporated into the facility. As he walked dejectedly down the sidewalk, local flora pressing in from each side, he heard, from the nearby forest, a screeching wail. It startled him and he had to stop a moment to catch his breath and wait for his heart rate to slow to something more manageable. He realized that it must have been an owl or some other night bird. His father had told him that there were always weird noises “out in the sticks”.
As he plunged his hands into his pockets and determined to go to his room for rest, he caught the faint smell of burning tobacco on the breeze. It wafted over his shoulder from behind and caused him to emit a feeble cough. He looked back in annoyance. In the shadows behind him, he saw a figure. It was dark and stood still in a way that made him uncomfortable. An orange glowing circle of embers hovered around the face and rendered just enough light to illuminate the blue-grey curls of smoke as they exited the tiny conflagration and rose above the brim of a black hat. The ember flared for a moment and then flashed to the ground and was snuffed by a shadowed… foot? It wasn’t exactly clear to Ted; the figure’s lower extremities were... blurred. An even brighter flare, from a lighter or match stabbed into Ted’s eyes as the Smoker lit his next cigarillo.
Ted glared irritation but felt uncomfortable at the unnatural stillness to which the figure returned once the new fire was lit. He coughed once more, this time deliberately in a passive-aggressive attempt to communicate his displeasure and resumed his walk. He strained to listen behind him to determine whether the figure followed. He truly wished to get away from the stink and the threat of cancer or other respiratory illnesses. He slowed to listen, then gave up and looked over his shoulder again. There was no figure in the dark back near the exit to the casino. He turned to resume his walk, but a smoky black form now loomed before him! Its eyes glowed and smoked like large twin cigars as it gaped a maw that emitted pure black smoke and glowed with blue flames within the deep tunnel of the throat. Ted’s consciousness fled his body and found itself in a burning nightmare landscape that extended for as far as he could perceive in all directions.

Darnell, known to his public as “Murder Bush” a deliberate mistranslation of “merde bouchea.k.a. “Deadly Rapper” for having been a suspect in a shooting back in his youth, stepped up to the dice pit as the geeky dude left. He had plenty of chips and cash to back them. His entourage was there to support him and kiss his backside as often as he wished. He rolled through six passes before he crapped out. He hadn’t over-bet, so he’d won a small amount. He picked up his latest winning chips and handed them to the hostess who had kept him well plied with drinks and snacks. He was sure that for the right price, she would take care of his other needs. He played a few card tables and finished with Roulette.
Each time he won a few chips, he passed them on to the young woman or to one of his flunkies. In the end, they had all received at least some reward for the praises they’d heaped upon him; not for any real accomplishments, but rather to curry favor with the man whom they considered to be wealthy and important: a celebrity. The girl stayed at his side and except for when he asked her questions, she said nothing. He liked that: bitch know her place, he reveled in internal satisfaction. He liked her looks too. She was medium height and a little, “thick”. She was clearly interested but hadn’t gotten in his way when he flirted with other women. He truly liked this one. The more he considered her, the more he wanted to get down to business.
Eventually, he posed the question to her, “How much for the next few hours?” His brazen suggestion that she would take money for sexual favors was the final test. If she grew angry, then she didn’t appreciate his genius…
“Whatever you think is fair. How about we see if I can satisfy you? If I can, then you may want to be generous… as you have been so far.” She hefted the chips so that the pieces clinked in her palm. “If not, I don’t deserve a reward.”
She had passed with flying colors. Might even take this one back to civilization with me, he purred in his mind. He’d always thought of himself as a Big Cat… maybe a leopard or jaguar, definitely something dangerous and sleek. His need grew more intense by the moment. He desperately wanted this woman. “Come on, let’s go to my room.” He husked in a voice grown thick with desire.
They reached his suite, his groupies having been dismissed to their own nefarious pursuits, even his bodyguard. The big man had shrugged, “Your call boss-man.” and then stumped across the hallway to his own room. Now he was finally alone with… her. He stripped off his shirt and flipped his shoes into a corner. She stood by the window and watched. The drinks he’d consumed finally caught up with him before he’d shucked his pants and drawers, “Hold on, I’ll be right back.” He was excited, which made urinating a challenge, but it had to be done, so that he could maximize his pleasure. When he stepped from the restroom, au natural, he saw that his latest conquest had done the same and now stood, bare to the world and staring out the window, all the curtains on it pushed to one side, so that the night loomed and the light of a single small desk lamp lit the room. He stalked over to her, ready to take her right there at the window in full view of anyone who looked up from the outside. He secretly hoped for an audience. He enjoyed having others watch him take what he wanted.
She turned to face him, her head lowered… no, it had sunken into her body, only her hair remained above her shoulders! A… mouth, gaping and slavering opened on her stomach, a mouth too large for her body and rimmed with rows of teeth like sharpened spikes. She stepped forward to embrace him and the screaming began… sounds that he was accustomed to eliciting from others rather than emitting from his own person.

“Rhino” was unhappy. He didn’t like to leave Darnell unattended. Perhaps now that his boss was in the room, he could go stand guard outside the door. He took care of some personal ablutions as he wolfed down a couple of energy bars and then walked out into the hallway. He started to settle in front of Darnell’s door, when he heard a muffled scream and faint… slobbering-gobbling noises come from the other side. He quickly tried the door, initially too panicked to think of the extra key card with which Darnell had entrusted him. He fumbled for it and soon had the door open. The interior was completely dark. The light from the hallway spilled inward but didn’t seem to reach as far into the room as it should.
He drew his pistol from the holster on his waistband and began to stalk forward, “Boss, you okay? You hurt?” The room was as silent as a tomb, he shivered a little as that thought crossed his mind. Over by the closed drapes, he smelled something awful: fresh blood and spilled entrails… recent death. His feet squelched on wet carpet. He turned around quickly. There had been no noise, but he’d felt a… presence. There she stood, arms spread wide, mouth on her gut spread wider. Rhino wasn’t one to scream or yell, even in extremis, so no others would come to this room to investigate.

Shelly was glad when the rowdy group left the roulette wheel that sat behind her favorite row of slots. The former “one-armed bandits”, that were now, “multiple button digital bandits” lined every available wall space, and in some spaces stood in rows that drew regulars like a dung-heap draws flies. She’d grabbed her favorite machine early in the evening and sat sliding in dollar bills and working up her points. It was called “Buffalo Dance” and featured images of American Bison and feather-bedecked hunters. The theme on the screen matched and she hoped to one day see the “White Buffalo” image adorn the entire set of images… the grand prize view. Despite the fun graphics, it was her favorite because it was near a restroom and a free soda and snack bar. She found herself ahead and on a roll. She absently lipped her dangling cigarette back into her mouth for a long draw. The smoke obscured the screen for a moment, and then she noted a shadow that lengthened across the reflective surface. Someone stood close behind her. Someone who exuded a chilly air. She paused and looked around, “Can I help you?”
There was no answer, though the shadow shifted slightly as if its caster had heard her.
Now she grew annoyed, this is just the sort of thing to break my winning streak! she raged internally. She braced her hands against the machine and worked her buttocks to make the stool on which she perched spin, so she could confront her harasser. She gaped, and nearly lost her cigarette, there was no one standing near enough to cast the shadow. No one even faced her. She chalked it up to excitement, maybe someone stepped too close when passing to go to the restroom, she thought, still a little annoyed and... chilled.
She turned back to her game and continued working the buttons, pumping in bills, and winning, a little at a time, the points now built well above her investment. This weekend is gonna pay for the last two months of losing and breaking even, she thought triumphantly. The shadow loomed across the screen once more, this time even larger, as though the figure that cast it stood closer. The shape was amorphous but hinted at anthropomorphic. She shivered as an icy breeze flowed around her, as though the air conditioning had sent out a short, cold burst, a minor malfunction…
She turned around with more alacrity and determination than the last time, mouth agape, cigarette once more dangling… precipitously and endangering the cleavage she displayed, already baked and wrinkled from years of sunbathing. The frigid air passed, and no one stood anywhere near her, though a customer approached, headed for either snacks or relief. “Excuse me sir, did you just see someone, maybe a large man, standing behind me?”
The man paused and looked at her in confusion. He had clearly been absorbed in his own thoughts, “Er, what? Uh, No. I wasn’t really paying attention, but… no.” He bustled on toward the free fountain drinks machine.
Shelly shrugged, can’t give up now, the pot is even bigger. She checked her points; she was nearing her all-time high. The winnings would pay her space rental fee at the RV park for the entire month. She pressed and played the buttons more fervently than ever, determined to break the bank on straight points or to reach that magical spin that would offer an instant reward of $10,000.00. She set her new points record and reveled for a moment. She reached for the now small stack of dollar bills the rest having been devoured by the machine. She fed in the entire remaining amount, then once more gazed at the screen. It was entirely blackened by a looming shadow.
The temperature of the air around her plummeted and she shuddered with the sudden biting cold. The cigarette was long extinguished, and she’d let the cold fag fall into the ash tray built onto the side of the machine opposite the drink holder. She was so cold, and she wanted to cry out for help, but the darkness closed in around her as the shadow enveloped her and cut off her breathing. Her fingers, paused above the “spin” button, struck and as her consciousness faded, she saw the flashing blue light and heard the blare of the winner’s siren. White Buffalo images filled all nine spaces. I won! The grand prize!

Terry filled his large cup and stood sipping and daydreaming. He’d lost everything he’d budgeted to lose. Yet he knew that one more try would put him back in black for this trip. He mused about what he would do with the prize money. He’d set his limit at $300.00 and had quickly lost it all on slots. Maybe he could risk just a few more dollars… skip a lunch or two until his next paycheck if it didn’t work. He was startled by the jackpot winner’s flashing light and siren that went off just behind him. That bitch! He yelled internally. Figures some old used up skank would win the big prize. He looked over at the nearby machine with anger and envy vying for control of his senses. She was gone!
He stepped over to the machine and looked around in confusion. Maybe she’d gone to the restroom? No, she’d have passed right by me. He shook his head and stepped up to look at the screen. He could still feel the recent presence of a player, the trace of warmth from a human body that might linger in a space for just a moment after the human had vacated the space. He looked around the casino floor, she was nowhere in sight. She’d been wearing a low-cut silver-spangled top that was cut way too low for her sagging, sun-ravaged bosom. She should be easy to spy, she looked like a deflated disco ball that had fallen from the ceiling to play slots. The only thing that came his way was a train of employees, led by a waitress in a skimpy outfit with purple sparkles and carrying a tray with a glass and a dark bottle. She was followed by other employees, who’d formed a sort of conga line: they sang a congratulatory chorus as they approached.
Terry gaped for a moment when he realized that they thought he was the big winner. He’d have to deny it of course. Surely the woman would be back at any moment to claim her prize. The floor cameras would have recorded who had sat at the machine, but it was too late. The group of enthused employees encircled him, and the attractive young waitress poured him a glass of champagne and snuggled up to him. The manager approached and seized his hand for a vigorous shake, “Well done sir! I see that not only have you hit the jackpot, but you’ve raised an additional $3,000.00 in points. A fabulous prize and well played I’m sure.”
Terry was flabbergasted. He’d never won anything like this… I still haven’t, not really, he reminded himself. He rarely broke even on his gambling forays, whether to the casino, or the corner store for lottery tickets and video slots. He allowed himself to be swept into the reverie and led from the machine to the bar. The employees peeled away as they approached, and he soon found himself with only the bottle and a receipt that he could cash out before he left the premises. A sullen-looking woman stood behind the bar, wiping glasses and a large, mean-looking security staffer menaced the far end. He already had his bottle, so he wasn’t sure why the staff members had deposited him with these two killjoys. He shrugged, picked up the champagne and started to walk away from the bar.
“You can’t take that with you. Either drink it here or give it to me and I’ll put it in the trash.” The bartender stated in monotone.
The security officer stood up straight from where he’d been leaning against the far wall, apparently propping up the building. He folded his massive arms in a threatening manner. Silly, thought Terry, folded arms should be a hindrance, but I get the feeling he’s dangerous regardless. He figured that he’d had enough anyway and set the nearly empty bottle on the bar, “You can keep it ma’am. I can afford another at the hotel.” Terry started to walk away from the bar, but a huge ham-like hand seized his shoulder.
Sausage-sized fingers applied painful pressure, “You apologize to the lady.” The wet heat from a mouth placed uncomfortably close to his ear and beath smelling of river bottom, sent a shiver of disgust through his body. The voice was low and deep as the river that ran past the back side of the property.
Terry decided on the better part of valor and head facing forward to avoid the obscene orifice, “Sorry ma’am, I meant no offense.”
The fingers let go and a harsh laugh sounded from behind the bar. “He don’t even know why he’s apologizing, fool. He ain’t worth the trouble, let him go.”
Terry felt a slight shove and he was sent on his way to the cash-out window. There he met with the lead cashier, an older woman in drab clothing, “I’m sorry sir, we give out only these pre-paid cards, we cannot provide cash over $1,000.00. However, you can treat them like a debit or credit card.” the cashier informed him. It seemed he had no choice, so he accepted. Thirteen grand is thirteen grand, he assured himself. He was elated, though he continued to glance around nervously, waiting for the woman in the sparkly fish-scale top to accost him and name him thief. Yet she was nowhere to be seen. The floor was full of players, some laughing, some intense, some dejected or mesmerized by the games of chance in which they’d lost themselves.
He thought about what to do with the rest of his evening. He didn’t have a hotel room; he’d planned to sleep in his station wagon as he always did before the long haul home. Perhaps he should get a room? Maybe they would take him without a reservation… he giggled a little at the unintended pun: a reservation at the Reservation… he shook his head to clear his overreaction to the silly internal joke. He decided that maybe someone on staff could help him. He approached the major domo at the front entrance that led to the interior walkway and the hotel beyond, “Excuse me sir, do you know whether the hotel will accept a resident without a prior reservation?”
The man, single dark braid wrapped in a leather holder and draped over one shoulder, looked at him gravely, “Yes, I know.” He said nothing more and did not smile as though he’d intended to be humorous.
Terry tried again, “Will you tell me please?”
The man flicked his chin in the direction of the hotel, “See the clerk at the desk.”
“Jerk, you’d think I hadn’t pissed away enough cash in this place over the past few years,” Terry muttered as he stumped toward the hotel, ensuring that he was well beyond earshot before he spoke. His head had begun to buzz a little from the champagne. Took a while for it to affect me, he mused. The hallway appeared to narrow, and his peripheral vision grew grey. He felt dizzy and as he entered the main lobby, the large room began to spin. His last view was of the sky-blue ceiling decorated with a few puffy clouds as it faded into darkness like the sun had set.
He awakened to the sounds of voices chattering happily. He looked around, his vision blurred slightly and his head feeling heavy and sore. He soon found that he could not move his arms or legs… they were bound… he was strapped to a table. He saw numerous bodies moving about in the mostly dark space in which he found himself. “Please.” He croaked, throat dry and feeling scraped. “Please, help me, let me loose. Loose me…” his perceptions cleared slowly, and he saw that the bodies that moved around him, now chanting rhythmically rather than babble-chattering, were emaciated. The owners showed as much bone through their skin as would a dead thing, long decayed. He noted spikes above a few heads… no, antlers… The rest wore… masks? Of various beasts… no, the skulls of those creatures, still filled with glistening fangs. Their dance grew ever more frantic, more energetic than they should be capable of performing. Then one of them reached out with a stick, on the end of which was a small claw, taken and preserved from some dead animal. It used the claw to gouge out a scoop of flesh from Terry’s side. He screamed in torment and horror. His screams soon matched the rhythm of the chanting and they went on for a long time before they at last faded when he’d lost too much blood to remain conscious.

Ideas for new stuff

My friends and I had some ideas for new locations, POI's and vehicles that we'd like to see in the upcoming seasons and game in general:

I really hope you like my ideas and feel free to share your ideas in the comments! (just don't be mean if someone has a different opinion on the old island)
EDIT 1: I've added some more weapons and stuff.
submitted by Meme_Chan69420 to FortNiteBR [link] [comments]

Unpopular opinion: I'm gonna miss the casino

Is it just me? I can understand why they wouldn't want to drop Emperor coins from mobs or even run the generous Emperor machines year round, but I don't really understand why they'd have no slots at all on a casino planet. Star Trek Online has Dabo tables that are functional year round, I'm not sure why they wouldn't run the lower end machines if nothing else for realism that you can in fact drop credits and spin them even if you won't win much outside the event. Beyond that, wouldn't that be a good credit sink as well? It's not like we can't use all of those we can get.
EDIT ADDENDUM: After reading some of the excellent suggestions in the replies, I'd like to add an expansion to my idea to clarify how I might wish it to be done.
Thanks for the feedback and the good discussion.

Laughlin trip report 9-1-20 / Covid experience

Hey y'all glad to see more casinos figuring out this covid mess, and some of you brave souls getting back to the tables! We had a few days and were in the area on road trip so decided to use a Tuesday comp room at Harrah's, Laughlin. Here's what I learned.
FIVE DOLLAR TABLES!
Aquarius - $5 ATS Gold Nugget -$5 Tropicana -$10
Aquarius seemed to have no problem keeping the table running all day.
Gold nugget opened the table at noon.
Harrah's, Tropicana, and Riverside were doing the 10$, and Trop opened the table at 6pm. Dealers in short supply, info from the pit manager. Heard this from multiple bosses across town.
If you are gonna stay in Laughlin, the Gold Nugget was desolate, perfect if you want to keep to yourself, but this was a weekday after all. Paul was a kind, hard working old-school dealer. Didn't get to tip him enough as my budget was already busted this trip. They have some decent video poker too, if you are into that. New members still get a free wheel spin for freeplay.
Aquarius felt pre-pandemic vibes. You could stand at any position if you were playing, and I got a good hour in ($60 buy in!!) and rolled my best there. I love longer tables. Hit 3 $1 hardways for the dealers, I was down to $10 and back to $60 three times, finally fizzled out. It is really hard to play with $60 but I made it happen. Almost hit the small but could not hit the snakes even if it was mating season! The table almost hit the ATS two more times but the dang snakes were hibernating. Insane.
Now, a word about pandemic procedures.
In an era of endless information, it seems that there is still no one agreed upon way to deal with covid-19 in public spaces. In general, I've found you just need to wash your hands and use sanitizers frequently, thick tight fitting cloth masks or a supply or surgical masks are a good thing, mandatory at one of my home casinos, Casino Del Sol. However, I got away with just my gaiter in Laughlin.
I've been going to casinos for a good two months in Southern Arizona now and the sanitizing seems to happen less on the slots and tables than before, so you have to just look out for yourself. I do enjoy a cigarette in a casino sometimes and it seems hard to get a drag in without some employee telling me to pull my mask up again. Apparently smoking and gambling gets security to boot you at some places, as one employee at Harrah's took it upon himself to watch me smoke and a third warning pulling my mask down to smoke would have called security. I put out my cig and called it a night.
Harrah's by far the most strict about everything Covid. With places to throw on the table marked by tape, 6 spots, and if you are with a significant other you can only stand directly behind, not touch any rails on the table. I Almost got booted for leaning over to see the throw.
At Aquarius it was everything like normal craps but spectators couldn't hang at the empty table, had to stay six feet back. Dealers didn't like the ambiguity but they still seem to be figuring things out there.
Sorry my rant went long but these are interesting times.
TLDR:
FIVE DOLLAR TABLES in Laughlin!
Aquarius - $5 ATS
Gold Nugget -$5 (table games opened at noon)
Tropicana -$10 (craps opened at 6pm weekday, seems to be a dealer shortage)
Covid-conditions: Aquarius: pre-pandemic standing at the table, masks (duh).
Gold Nugget: desolate, great dealers when they have them
Harrah's: half-capacity standing, no spectators in general, forget enjoying a smoke without getting threatened with the boot.
Use sanitizers and get out there everyone, but be safe (don't lick your dang hands and stay away from your face...) and keep rolling!!

Starting Out:
If you've just started Project JoJo, this is my guide.
When you join, you'll have little cash and no stand. First, you want to find the wooden dummies. They are near one of the spawnpoints, just explore the map and you'll find them. You want to continuously punch the dummies, and get 3500 cash. Killing a wooden dummy grants 50 cash. If you get a level, press M and check your stats. Put all your stat points into Power for now, as this increases your attack power. Don't worry, you can reset your stat points later in the game.
When you have 3500 cash, then go to the shop and buy a stand arrow. The stand arrow will appear at the bottom of your screen, and use it quickly before you get killed, as items get lost if you die in this game. Press M and hover over the "Ability" button to see your stand. Mash the buttons on your keyboard to see what your stand does. You can also pick up arrows from the floor, they spawn every 5 minutes.
Here is the rarity tier for stands - check how rare your stand is:
https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/project-jojo/images/5/5e/Unknown0.png/revision/latest?cb=20200406193200
What if you decided to get the 500$ instead? Well, instead of buying a Stand Arrow, you need to get the stand "Shotgun" from the store. It may be a weak ability, but it helps you complete quests.
What is a "Rokakaka Fruit"?
A rokakaka fruit, or commonly referred to as a "ro ka" due to Roblox's chat filter, is a red, spiky fruit that you can find around a spiky, thin plant with a green leaf on top. When you hold this item out, you can either redistribute your stat points, or delete your stand pernamently. Remember that any stands that are tier 5 or over are generally considered "good" by the majority, with some exceptions lower than tier 5. Rokakaka fruits can also be bought from the shop for 500$.
The next step is to grind, grind, and grind again. Wooden dummies have an extremely fast spawn rate, so they are ideal for grinding coins. Continue to use a rokakaka fruit to delete your stand, and then use an arrow again. Only stop once you get either a tier 5 or higher, or either The Sun or Ratt. You can find many tutorials on the Internet teaching you how to use Ratt and The Sun properly for farming, so I won't go into detail about it.
NPC's:
You may see specific NPC's around the map in random places. We'll be talking about the different types of NPC's here.
Quest Givers:
There are several types of quest givers. The main quest givers, with the quest name floating above their heads, give a quest bar on the side when you click on them. You can only take 1 quest at a time, and quest progress does not save. They are basic NPC's, staying in the same position and offering no dialogue.
The other type of quest givers, in which there are only 2 in Morioh, the main map, have dialogue and their quests do not appear as a quest bar at the side. You can take a normal quest and one of these at the same time. Quests from the more "intelligent" NPC's are usually harder and quest progress for them does save. Jotaro Kujo, one of these 2 quest givers, is located behind the school. The other, Gyro Zeppeli, is located in the train station at the centre. Both of them unlock vital parts of the game, including rare items and another map to go to.
Spec Givers
These are randomly spawning NPC's around the map. They also are a vital part of the game, but I won't be talking about them in this guide. However, note that Gyro, one of the spec givers, looks exactly like Gyro Zeppeli.
Stand Storage
If you go in the restaurant near the centre, you will meet Enrico Pucchi inside. He can store a stand that you want to keep, and he has 9 slots. Note that you need 500$ to use the Stand Storage. You also need at least 5% worthiness to access the Stand Storage, but using it does not deduct your worthiness. More about worthiness is in the next section.
Bosses
DIO - Drops DIO's diary, gives worth, spawns every 30 min - 1 hr
Kira - Drops either Red Aja - Stone Roka - Requiem Arrow at a 1/3 chance each, 3 minute despawn time, 30 minutes - 2 hours spawn time
Notourious B.I.G - Gives access to Italy when doing Gyro Zeppeli's quest, drops $5000 ~ $10000?
Diavolo - Drops a Corpse Part, spawns in Italy every 30 min - 2 hr, despawns in an unknown amount of time
Worth Guide:
If you use an arrow and get, say, a tier 6 Star Platinum, then if you have 100 worth, you have a 100% chance of getting a tier 7 as your rank got boosted by 1. If I had 50% worth instead of 100%, then there would be a 50% chance that I would get a tier 7 instead.
I would also lose 10% worthiness, as whenever you use an arrow, you lose 10% worthiness. The maximum worthiness you can get is 100, in which you would be able to get at least a tier 2 stand.
The glowing diary and bone that spawns around the map gives 10% and 5% worth respectively. The quests A Huge Issue (gives 5% worth, at school) and Assault The Titans (near river, gives 10% worth) are some quests that give worth.
DIO, who has an half an hour to an hour spawn rate, spawns near the Casino in Morioh and has 1,200,000 HP. Basically a Titan Dummy, but said Titan Dummy will spam timestop and steal your HP.
9/10 of the time, you get 100 worthiness and that can be seen in the form of a white aura arounf your character. If you don't get the white aura or if you see a diary on the floor where DIO died, you've gotten DIO's diary, a rare item that can reset subspecs or ascend certain stands (it can be used to make MiH, TWOH, and SPOH).
Italy:
Another map that you can access by completing Gyro Zeppeli's quest. Diavolo, Space Dummy, Enrico Pucchi, Holy Dummy, Rubber Dummy, and Evil Star Platinum User can be found here. Rare items like the Aja Mask have a chance of spawning here.
Dummies:
Wooden Dummy: The worst dummy in the game, but ideal for cash farming.
Ice Dummy: Slightly better, and what The Sun users farm with.
Stone Dummy: Found in the caves below Hyperspace Dummy, an average dummy.
Metal Dummy: Found at most of the spawns, has 1500 HP.
Giant Dummy: Found at the school near Jotaro Kujo, objective of the quest A Huge Issue, has 50,000 HP.
Titan Dummy: Found around the map, as tall as a building. Has 1 million health.
Hyperspace Dummy: Found above the cave with the Stone Dummies, changes color. Can dodge almost every attack and has 150,000 HP.
Ultimate Dummy: Found above the waterfall. Has 100,000 HP, but nearly impossible to kill as he regenerates half his max HP every second. There is only one per server, and it does not respawn.
ITALY-Holy Dummy: Found in Italy. Takes 1/2 damage and gives 0.5% worthiness when killed. Has 75,000 HP.
ITALY-Space Dummy: Found in Italy. Takes 1/10 damage and gives a lot of EXP.
ITALY-Rubber Dummy: Found in Italy. Reflects almost all attacks back to the user. Has 1,000 HP.
Evil NPC's
Evil Stone Free User: Uses the stand Stone Free. Has more HP than Evil Star Platinum User.
Evil Star Platinum User: Found in Italy. Uses the stand Star Platinum Prime. Has less HP than Evil Stone Free User.
All items
Rokakaka Fruit: Resets your stand/stat points.
Stand Arrow: Gives you a stand.
Wrench: When clicked on with no stand, gives you the stand Cyborg.
Diary: Gives 10% worth when clicked on.
Bone: Gives 5% worth when clicked on.
Cash Pile: Gives 300 cash when clicked, 500 when collected with the stand Harvest.
Red Aja: Used in Jotaro Kujo's 2nd quest, also used to make Aja Mask.
Aja Mask: Spawns in Italy. Can be created by talking to Jotaro Kujo with a Red Aja and Vampire Mask in your inventory. Gives the ULF spec to stands, or if used on Kars, gives the stand Ultimate Lifeform.
Stone Rokakaka: Used to give the Stone Human subspec, now is the major component in fusions.
Rebirth Arrow: Got removed.
Requiem Arrow: Gives the Requiem spec, which gives a 25% boost in stats.
Specs
Specs are basically a sort of sub-stand, and in some situations, you can have 2-3? specs and a stand. Some specs like Hamon can be used without a stand, and some sub-stands can affect which stand you get from an arrow or are a requirement to get a specific stand.
List of specs (may be incomplete)
Hamon - Gives a boost in stats. This subspec can be bought in the shop for $15,000, but using Hamon is not generally reconmended unless testing it on a disposable stand or attempting to get Caesar's Hamon, as there are much better subspecs.
Vampire - Makes the stand Vampiric. Can be gotten by a Vampire Mask, which spawns around the map and can be bought at the shop for $15,000. Vampiric is considered to be even worse than Hamon for some as even though it makes all attacks heal the user, it takes high damage when exposed to sunlight.
Blessing - A blessing is obtained by using a Corpse Part, which is only obtainable by killing Diavolo in Italy. There are many different blessings, like Exalted, which prevents all damage by posing. Note that you cannot do a fusion while you have a blessing on your stand.
ULF (Ultimate) - Not too sure about this one. I think it gives a massive boost in stats? Tell me in the comments if you have more info about this spec.
Spin: Has its own set of abilities without a stand. With a stand, it gains a power boost when the meter is charged up?
Stands that can only be gotten by using specs
Purple Hermit: Has purple-like vines tangled around its arms. Can attack with arms and swing around like Spiderman.
Ball Breaker: Obtained by using an Arrow when you have the Spin spec with no stand.

I won $18,072.75 yesterday.

Hey folks!

My last story here was about the week I spent playing roulette on the Oasis of the Seas back in November - you can read that here: https://www.reddit.com/gambling/comments/9waz71/today_ends_my_week_of_degenerate_gambling_at_sea/

I haven't gambled since November, so broke out two grand to take another go at the roulette table. I've been pissed since November because RCCL was so stingy on comps, and for a week of gambling, I got a $100 slot voucher. I don't even play slots. RCCL casinos don't give free drinks either until you're in a tier above the one I'm in, so I'm doubly pissed going in - literally fueled by anger.

My stupid roulette table wasn't even open yet, and I'm not going to play American roulette, so I sat down at the nearest flashy slot machine, which was called big super mega spins or something, and had 3x 4x 5x spins. There's an hour before my table is scheduled to open, and the pit boss won't get a dealer in sooner, so I sit down at this thing so I can get a view of my roulette table and be there as soon as it opens.
I apologize that I don't know all the slot lingo, but over 45 minutes on this machine, I turned that $100 voucher into $15,000. I won one big jackpot and 3 ... big not total jackpots doing $10 spins. I'd expected to be there for 10 spins, then gone and trolling the bar to gripe at the bartender for an hour how sucky the casino comps were. I hit one big win, then a jackpot, then after a while with a crowd watching, two more big wins. I'm talking to the crowd the whole time, with "I DON'T EVEN WANT TO PLAY THIS STUPID THING, I JUST WANTED TO PLAY ROULETTE."
45 minutes into it, poof. My roulette table opens up early. I get up and leave my machine, and these two older ladies start jostling in to get in my spot. The table limit is still $5 - $1000, and despite now having an extra $15,000, they still won't raise the table limit for me. I'm feeling lucky, so instead of martingaling, I put $1000 on red and win. $1000 on red and win. $1000 on black and win.

My sanity nudged through my adrenaline at that point, and I tipped the dealer $100, then went to the poker table. I don't play poker - I don't have the patience, but I bought in for $20, got dealt a suited J/A, went all in pre-flop, got called, picked up another $72.50.

I halfway feel like I should do another 10 page novel about it, but....this time, that might be enough. I don't even know how to explain this. I ****ing hate slots.

Balancing a chaos magic dungeon

I'm about to throw my players into a chaos mage controlled dungeon. I have the general outline, and am looking for tips on balancing some of my randomized ideas.
The conceit is that the players find themselves in a casino controlled by a harlequin/jester type dragonborn mage. He speaks in limericks, loves to leave things up to chance...but always comes out on top. There are three segments: a combat focused random encounter room, a skill based platforming/magical trap room, and a final room that seems like a puzzle but is really just a way to soften up my players a bit before the 'boss' encounter with the chaos mage. That room I have down, it's just the first two and the final encounter I might need some help with. We are playing 4th edition (I know, we're switching to 5th after this + one more dungeon)
Combat Room The way I imagine this room working is this: each player (I have 5) rolls a d20, and based on the result, out pops a monster for them to fight. Based on how high or low the roll is, you get progressively tougheeasier monsters. I don't think I need to have a separate monster for all 20 possibilites, more like nat 1 is a level 1 creature, nat 20 is something around level 16 (my players are level 13), 2-5 is a level 12 creature, 6-10 is a level 13, 10-14 is level 14, 14-19 is level 15. There will be a secondary dice roll for a party wide buff, debuff, or otherwise good/bad situation.
Skill/Platforming Room
This one's tougher. I imagine a big chasm (lots of may players have flight/long jump abilities at this point, so it's gotta be wide as heck) the players have to get across. There will be a series of platforms, and I'm unsure if I want them randomly generated or not. For example, rolling once for how many platforms, rolling again for how large they are, and rolling a third time for average distance between them or something like that, but that seems like a lot of work mid-session, so I thought a better one would be to have a predetermined set of platforms, and the randomization comes in what kind of platform they are. For example, roll a d6 to determine if the platform has a riddle you must solve or get zapped for damage, another 1-on-1 combat encounter, a trap you must save against, etc. Some other ideas or an easy way to randomize platform placement would be helpful here.
Final Encounter For this one, I'm imagining the chaos mage behind a magical barrier controlled by a slot machine. The barrier, at first, only comes down if you use a minor action to spin the slots and roll a nat 20 on your check (house always wins, after all). Any other number causes an effect to happen - monster spawn, a trap is placed on the map, etc. Basically reusing the hazards from the previous rooms, but in a higher pressure situation. Arcana and theivery checks as a standard action can be used to manipulate the odds on the slot machine so that the barrier comes down on other rolls besides nat 20 - I'm thinking of letting the players choose a new number on every succesful check, to give it a sort of roullette/betting theme. The mage himself is actually pretty weak, he'll just be one level 13 dude on his lonesome with not that much HP. The barrier will also reset after one round. I'll probably leave the odds as they were, so not resetting to a nat-20 only. I'm also thinking that the room will have a monster or two at the start just to prevent the players from getting lucky, rushing the slot machine and never having to face another monster aside from the mage himself.
Does this sound rife with holes? It SHOULD feel chaotic, and lucky rolls should let my players get off scot free in some situations, but I don't want it to be too easy OR too difficult.

SHADOWGUN LEGENDS TIPS

If you enjoy these tips, please leave a +1 to show your love! <3 (freshly updated for 0.5)
It takes some time to get to level 20, let's be honest. Even longer to level 20+5. What's level 20+5, you might ask? Keep reading and you'll soon find out!
I'm starting this reddit post for all new players, and some more experienced players out there that are looking for some sort of guidance.
To a better understanding, GOLD = Premium currency ; CASH = in-game money.
LEVELING UP
  • All game modes will give you XP for leveling up. Although PvP modes gives less XP, they are definitely more fun.
  • Since update 0.5, the easiest way to gain XP to leveling up is through the blue missions. And now you can do them with a friend! Which will make them quicker and more fun. Do those blue missions repeatedly for fast XP.
  • At level 20, you're quite not there yet. There are 5 extra "levels", where the level 20+5 is where your power reaches it's maximum.
  • You shouldn't grind dungeons or arenas until you reach that level "25".
  • You will continue to gain experience through gameplay and level up even after reaching level 20. The number that shows on screen will keep being 20 though. What happens is that each time you level up, you'll gain a boost of about +10 power for all the equipment that you find or buy. So you need to level up 5 times or reach level "25" (20+5) to start seeing some 241-249 power equipment on the store. 250 at this moment is the maximum power available and can only be seen on specific epics and legendary gear. You can level up indefinitely though.
  • You should start farming for legendary/unique epic guns when you reach level "25". You can get Legendary weapons at any game modes. Remember, they are hard to find!
  • Don't forget to do your daily missions! They give you good xp for leveling up as well as a lot of fame!
POWER LEVEL
Since the update 0.5 I had to introduce this new tab for this guide. Things are...well...not as easy as they were, so let me explain.
  • When you reach level "25", you won't be seeing 250 power equipment in shops, neither decoding 250 power blue holograms.
  • Your power level will solely increase through rarity. So at level "25", you can find stuff ranging from 241 power to 250 power. (before all equipment would be 250 power). This means, you'll want to go for those epics and legendary equipment pieces asap, so it's time to start farming for those in dungeons/arena.
  • Legendary gear is the only rarity that can give you 250 power. Epics have around 248-249, rares a bit lower, uncommon even lower and the lowest are the common items.
  • Legendaries not obtained in Mind Hive and Silver Arena are not 250 power. Voltaic Fist and Blade Dancer drop 245 power Legendaries. (hope this gets changed soon!)
  • There are rumours that there are some unique epics that can also reach power 250.
EQUIPMENT
  • Do not worry about getting good weapons and armour before reaching 250 power. You'll be swapping them constantly.
  • Sprays are a one time thing, while stickers return to your inventory after selling an item with it.
  • It's a good idea to hold onto equipment gear that contains the loot perk. They will be great for farming better rarity gear at the level cap. They're found on shoulder gear.
  • Say you got two pieces of chest in your inventory. One is 200 power but contains a great perk, and the other has 220 power, but a "bad" perk, or no perk at all. Choose the one with the good perk. Power on gear doesn't change a thing! Only in weapons.
  • Remember that gear perks start innactive. You need to use it to unlock the perks. The first two perks are through dealt damage so you will easily do them in any kind of mode. The third perk onwards gets unlocked through winning fame! So Ascendancy is the easiest way to unlocking those.
  • At max level (25) you can start considering making a cool looking outfit. With permanent armour pieces.
  • The best armour pieces will have a critical perk. Aim for those. You can get critical perks in all armour pieces, except the chest one, which you should aim for the health boost perk.
WEAPONS
(the ones in bold can be achieved through dungeons/arenas and by gold on the shop).
  • Shotguns:
  • Good for close range combat. Best used at PvP.
  • The highest damage per shot amongst all primary weapon types.
  • The best shotguns are the ones with a higher damage.
  • Either go with a Volta ll or a Fire Fist Roarer (dungeon/arena reward).
  • Rifles:
  • A great jack of all trades weapon.
  • Great at mid to close combat, being fenomenal at mid combat, where you'll keep your distance.
  • Great for PvP and PvE.
  • Here are a few of the best auto rifles: Shadow, Skull Blaster 3000, Fire Fist Spewer, Peculiar MC, Foxhound ll, Barracuda ll.
  • Here is the best burst rifle: AT Osipov ll.
  • Sniper Rifles:
  • Great for dealing with elites and bosses.
  • Use it for the big guys.
  • The best ones are the ones with a higher damage.
  • Besson's Killer is the best sniper in the game. If you're fortunate enough to have the True Patriot, it's pretty devastating too.
  • Machine Guns:
  • They can cause havoc on earth.
  • With high magazine sizes and great damage, those have the highest dps in the game!
  • Great for mobs, bosses and PvP.
  • The jack of all trades for secondary weapons.
  • Kosa ll, Fock ll and Despair ll are the best ones.
  • Pistols:
  • They can easily be used as your main weapons if you possess the Gunslinger skill.
  • Versatile and great for saving up ammo, since you have infinite bullets.
  • Go with a Kub ll for some serious damage.
LEGENDARY WEAPONS
Here's a complete list of legendary weapons:
  • Mother's Promise pistol and Muu Chaser machine gun (Voltaic Fist)*
  • Niko's Stopper auto rifle (Blade Dancer)*
  • Fearargini shotgun and Slade's Shitstorm rocket launcher (Silver Arena)*
  • Kira smg (Duels, Ascendancy and Dungeons)
  • OG Moneymaker sniper (PvP modes)
  • True Patriot sniper (Pedro's Lucky Wheel)
  • Legendary Basilisk and Invictus sets (Each dungeon and Silver Arena drops a specific piece)
  • Project Embra assault rifle and Plasma Blaster smg (Mind Hive)
  • After Update 0.5 the locations might have changed.
PERKS
(always lookout for % Critical Damage perk in weapons and armour)
  • Perks are what differentiates a good item, from a great one.
  • In weapons, always look out for those perks: % Damage, % Critical Damage, % Fire Rate, % Mag Size, % Accuracy (for SMG's mainly).
  • In equipment, always look out for these perks:
  • Boots: % Critical Damage and % Knockdown Resistance.
  • Legs: % Critical Damage and % Magazine Capacity on your weapon of choice.
  • Chest: % Health. Maximum found was 24% total.
  • Shoulders: % Critical Damage and % Loot. The % Loot percentage increases the chance of enemies dropping loot during missions. It does not affect the drop rates of epics and legendaries.
  • Arms: % Critical Damage, % Accuracy and or Damage with your favourite weapons.
FARMING EQUIPMENT
  • The skill and/or perks on shoulders for % Loot does not increases your odds on finding better rarity items.
  • The two best places to farm for items are the Silver Arena and Mind Hive. You can do Silver Arena in about 15 minutes with a good Squad. Mind Hive is doable in about 8 minutes.
  • Voltaic Fist, Blade Dancer, Brother of Fire and Bronze Arena all have worst loot then the two mentioned above. But they are worth grinding since each specific dungeon will have a specific and unique legendary drop.
  • If you need cash and/or are looking for better epics and a better chance at legendaries, go for Silver Arena or Mind Hive. They will always give you 10+ items per run.
  • If your backpack is full and you see an epic hologram or legendary hologram on the ground, stand on top of it, open your menu and drop stuff from backpack until you pick up the item you want.
SKILLS
  • At this moment in time, there are only 18 skill points available. This means you won't be able to unlock the "ultimate skill" of choice available at a hybrid branch.
  • Before investing on skills, have a look at all of them. Passives and actives. See which ones suits your play style and invest on them. Remember that there are hybrid skills which can be obtained by a mixture of 2 main skill sets (Agility, Combat, Survival). The active skills at the top of the hybrid tree is the strongest (although they're not yet obtainable).
  • For me, the best build is going at 12 Agility, 3 Combat and 3 Survival. This way you get the extra HP and HP regen on Survival, a few good passive skills in Combat and the best skills in the Agility tree. Of course it all depends on your playstyle.
  • You can reset skills by an increasing charged value. It starts at 1000 cash, then 4000 cash, then 10g and it keeps increasing after that in gold. They said that after a few days or weeks (don't know exactly how long) the value charged resets to the first one of 1000 cash. So you'll only need to pay gold if you keep changing it all the time.
  • Since update 0.5 you can reset your skills but beware!!! You'll need to pay cash to upgrade them all over from level 1 to level 5, so save up some cash to upgrade those asap.
  • Start by focusing on 2 active skills. Use your cash to upgrade those throughout your journey. The beauty lays on the passive skills. All of them can be upgraded bringing to you awesome permanent effects that will help you at all times. Focus on those.
  • You can always switch active skills up for some interesting combos as you progress! Just try to save your cash on the early levels.
  • For PvP a good combination of Active skills are: Grenades and Deflector Skin.
  • For PvE, you can go with AM bomb for big enemy mobs and Supercharger for that last boss fight.
  • You can change an active skill during a match. Just pause the game and click on the skill icon you want to change.
BUFFS
  • If you stay for about 30 seconds in the Casino or Bar you'll get two random buffs that can be seen in the top left corner of your screen. Those can help you on all game modes. At the Bar you can get more PvE related buffs, such as: Increased Damage, Bullet Resistance, Elite Damage Boost. In the Casino, you'll always get: Critical Damage boost and Accuracy boost.
Each buff will randomly be from level 1-3.
  • Good thing there is alcohol! If you don't like the ones you got, drink 2 beers to loose one buff, and 4 to loose both. You'll get drunk, so to avoid this, immediately drink Detox Juice to lower the alcohol level. Then wait another minute at the Bar or Casino for two new buffs. You can do this for as long as you want.
  • Since update 0.5 you can get one of the best buffs in the game by helping out a low level player. A message will pop-up randomly at your screen at some points telling you that a new player needs help with a mission. Accept it and you'll get almost double fame for a period of 1 hour. Use this buffed period to play Ascendancy and Duels (where you usually can farm more fame).
RIBBONS AND MEDALS
Those are really important after reaching level 20+5. These will help you gain fame faster. At the same time, you'll find some of them really challenging which will give you some sense of accomplishment for getting them.
  • You can farm ribbons in any game-modes. Although some are specific for PvP and others for PvE.
  • A specific amount of ribbons will equal one medal.
  • People often complete the Pistol and Pistol Pro ribbons by using a pistol to kill spiders in the Arena.
  • There are 8 secret ribbons. They're all known to the community, but not to spoil anything, I won't tell you them in here.
  • The tip I can give you to complete the secret ribbons is: Lots ip aes ud nadek any alp!
  • Have fun completing your ribbons and medals collection!
GOLD CURRENCY
There are two reasons to invest money in this game.
  1. Support the devs!!!! No need to explain this.
  2. Increase your inventory space. As a f2p player, you start with 16 inventory slots. Basically this means that you won't be able to save any cool gear you find along the way, nor holograms, paint, etc. You'll constantly be in the need of freeing up space. By spending any cent in this game, you automatically upgrade your storage to 96 slots!!! That's 80 more! Meaning that if you enjoy the game, and don't want to be constantly managing your storage by selling/using stuff, it's an easy fix.
  • Just remember to always watch the ads for some free daily gold.
Ok, so what you can do with gold in the game? As for now, these are the options:
  • Use it at the Slot Machine if you're feeling lucky. Who knows, maybe you'll get that juicy Jackpot!
  • Spin the wheels at the Casino and/or at Pedro.
  • Save up for some cool unique weapons that shows at the shop. Remember those can also be dropped at dungeons.
  • Buy cosmetics in the shops!
CASH CURRENCY
In the beginning I was struggling to make all the necessary upgrades since cash was so scarce. But at later levels, when constantly farming dungeons and arenas, you'll be constantly at the max cap level of 750k cash. Best ways to get cash?
  • Sell all the stuff you don't need. You'll do that constantly since every mission you'll find better gear.
  • Find a good sponsor from the beginning! Choose the ones that give you gold hourly.
  • Do a lot of co-op. Silver Arena gives you a lot of items. Some will help you upgrade your gear, but most of them will sell for a good thousand bucks at the nearest store!
GAMEPLAY
  • Watch some youtube videos from JHC Gaming or Awall. They offer a few cool tips and tricks that could really help along the way!
  • If you pre-registered and won those cool gifts, DO NOT open your Legendary Pistol until you reach level "25"!!! Otherwise it will become obsolete after a few missions. Keep that 250 horsepower on it!
  • To know you're level 20+5, check the stores. If guns and armor are capped at 250 power, it means you're max level. Congratulations!!!
  • The fill up missions (Blue ones) takes around 3 minutes to complete if you rush them. They are pretty repetitive though, so avoid playing them one after the other.
  • Aim for their heads!!! A critical hit can be made by either headshot, or a shot in the back. It literally deals 2.5x more damage than a regular shot. It's definitely worth it.
  • A good way of killing bosses is by using a sniper (or rocket launcher if you like big explosions). Save those bullets for those pesky big buffed dudes.
  • Start adding high level players! You'll need all the help you can get by the time you reach max level.
  • Play the Silver Arena for the better odds on epic and legendary loot.
  • To easily kill the boss in the Arenas, stay in opposite sides of your teammates. This way, he'll keep turning his back to at least one player at all times!!! Use a sniper or machine gun for a lot of damage. And don't forget, always keep an eye on your back for minions.
  • Also, don't forget that you can drop loot during missions if you don't have enough space to pick up something else. Just pause the game and reach for your backpack.
  • If you play any kind of co-op, try to form a full squad!! A Squad is the only way (for now) to communicate with teammates. Making dungeons and arenas easier.
PVE MODE
  • Make a squad so you can define roles for each player. You'll complete it faster and not have a headache.
  • Watch speed-run videos on youtube, mainly from JHC Gaming for a better understanding on how to complete dungeons.
  • Farm arena and dungeons when you reach level 20+5. It's time to go after those legendary/unique epics.
PVP MODE
  • If you, like me, enjoy playing some multiplayer as well as exterminating all aliens out there, those tips are for you:
  • Don't feel embarassed if you need to take cover for a bit. You need to be smart. Take advantage of the numerous containers/walls available on the map to protect yourself from taking extra damage.
  • Never give your back to the opponent. A hit in the back counts as a critical damage. You'll die in the blink of an eye.
  • The best skills in PvP are the ones with a lower cooldown: Stunner, Deflector Skin and Frag Grenades are all amazing tools.
  • Secondary weapons are great, but avoid using them. They require you too search for ammo (out in the open) leaving you exposed to get shot, and to die. Horribly. The best time to open secondary ammo chests are right after killing the opponent in duels.
  • As primary weapons, I suggest either a Shotgun which will give you an advantage at closer range or a Rifle for versatility.
  • Pistols are pretty cool in PvP. The Gunslinger skill was nerfed to 50% increased damage (used to be 100%, can you imagine it?) but if you have it, give those pistols a try.
  • In Ascendancy always stay together with your teammates. Numbers are key!
  • Also in Ascendancy, if in the middle of a battle a teammate dies next to you, stop attacking and go revive him. You're invincible during revival, so bringing them back will increase your odds of winning that fight.
BONUS: PERFECT SCENARIO
So you now got a grip of most of the Shadowgun World. So let's play a game. What would the perfect scenario for leveling up be?
  • Create an account. Durdddd. But please, choose a bad-ass name! Don't forget to choose a name. Otherwise, you'll be just another shadowgu291e93 from the game.
  • Start by finishing the "tutorial" and knowing the Hub characters.
  • Optional: Buy the cheapest gold pack to unlock the 96 inventory slots and support the devs. The game will be much more enjoyable this way.
  • Start grinding main missions, side missions and blue missions to start the process of leveling up.
  • You'll start getting loads of new armours and weapons. Don't freak out, they will be awful in a few minutes. So when you get a better one, sell the old ones.
  • Start by putting your skill points where needed. Remember, you only have 18 points, so with a quick math, check where's the best place to put them. Remember to complete your favourite tree (agility, combat or survival) and putting the "rest" on your second favourite tree.
  • When you unlock Nitro's wargames, do it once for fun, but don't do them to level up.
  • When you unlock Hakim, choose a sponsorship. Remember, aim for the hourly ones.
  • Remember, level up by doing your single-player missions. Those are the most rewarding for faster levelling.
  • An observation: Always watch the ads for free gold. You'll want those to unlock the golden crates.
  • Keep grinding those missions. I know, they're are repetitive and it takes longer now to level up. But don't give up! The fun and rewards are coming!
  • Keep the grind until you hit the maximum level, which is 20+5, you'll start to drop 250 power gear.
  • Now it's time to farm power 245-250 gear! You're "max" level, so don't worry about that anymore.
  • Start farming the Silver Arena and Mind Hive for loot.
  • Don't forget to get your boosts at the Casino or Bar before entering a game! They help!
  • Upgrade your gear through the powerful items you find in Silver Arena and Mind Hive. Sell the ones you don't need.
  • Keep playing those maps until you get an epic weapon and armour you like.
  • Don't forget to keep an eye on the shops!!! It refreshes every six hours and you can complete your powerful set by buying items there.
  • After getting good gear, start hunting for legendaries! Play PvP for a chance on Kira and OG Moneymaker; Dungeons and Arena for other great legendaries.
  • Get to know other Legends that are also grinding for legendaries, and start squading up with them for easier and quicker runs!
  • Now what will differentiate you from the rest, is your fame. The more famous you are, the better people will know you!
  • For quick fame, just play loads of PvP and try to complete as many ribbons/medals as you can.
  • So now it's all about farming unique epics, legendaries and winning fame.
  • Make friends.
  • Find unique gear.
  • Become a legend.
Hope you like this tips compilation! Now let's go rock some alien ass, Legends!
