Interpretation In this Act, unless the context otherwise requires- "authorised officer" means an officer of the Department authorised to act on its behalf and shall include such other public officers as the Minister may appoint after consultation with the respective authorities; The Hazardous Substances Act 15 of 1973 intends: to provide for the control of substances which may cause injury or ill-health to or death of human beings by reason of their toxic, corrosive, irritant, strongly sensitizing or flammable nature or the generation of pressure thereby in certain circumstances, and for the control of certain electronic products; The Hazardous Wastes (Management and Handling) Rules, 1989 (as amended, May, 2003) 1. Short title and commencement (1) These rules may be called the Hazardous Wastes (Management and Handling) Rules, 1989, as amended in January 6, 2000 and May 21, 2003. (2) They shall come into force on the date of their publication in the Official Gazette. 2. hazardous waste management activity (i.e., containers, tank systems, drip pads, surface impoundments, waste piles, land treatment, landfills, containment buildings, and incinerators).
